Hello,

How should I play connectors like 89s, JTs, 9Ts from MP at cash games against villians who are at good position like button or CO?

example:

Blinds: 0.05/0.10
my hole card (MP): 8♦9♦

villian (Btn) : AJ+ (Assumptions) since made raised before preflop.

Flop:
2♥ 4♠ 8♥

would appreciate if anyone can help me to understand should i make good raise or play cautiously making small bets or just check and raise at river. especially when villian have big stack and also at the scenario when we both have equal stacks

Thank you.

They're speculative. You're trying to get in cheap to see a flop and hit a draw. The odds of hitting the draws are very low, so you don't want to call pre-flop raises and get worse odds. You want 5-6 limpers and a rosy estimate of implied odds.

If you don't flop a draw, check/fold.

if you called the villians raise preflop and only ended up with a (likely) middle pair, no overs, and no draws i'd check/fold turn and pray for another 8. even with the assumption of AJ+ you're looking at some flopped trips in his range (4% chance to win), overcards (giving you a 80% chance or something), and he could always have some hearts mixed in to give draws.

to me it's an easy fold ...what i'm hoping for on that flop is some diamonds, some draws or something i can semi-bluff with (at worst)

simple brother you must make a high average raise since you do not want the cheap page or give away cards to your opponent I would try to finish that hand there is to avoid bad times since it is a very compromising flop

I like to play these kind of hands in position and as the aggressor so I have good board coverage when I hit and I also have range protection on broadway boards. I think that is the best way to play them. Can also be profitable to try get to see a cheap flop when close to closing the action best to try get in there mutliway and try flop a monster

Suited connectors play

Hi there,

in a cash game situation at those stakes, i would be looking at the occasional play with those type of holdings if i am faced with multi way callers - facing any sort of raise, again i would consider the occasional call but as a rule, i am looking at folding or if cheap, flat calling and folding if i do not hit well.
Facing an assumptive AJ - i would consider a re-raise but again the question i have to ask myself is - will the villain jam? What is my response..if i am raising..am i prepared to jam/call off or does my stack allow for a peel or two?

There are lots of merits playing suited connectors but again facing raises from in position - the better call is to fold and pick a better spot, at least this is probably my play in live poker - online, possible a mixed response.

Regards

Sometimes you've gotta get out of the way and fold. Think of it like merging on to a highway. Wait for a clearing to accelerate.

make him pay to see a card, large raise as it is a good bet he didn't hit unless he has a strong pocket pair.

Depends on your position. How big did the Button raise? Do you have any info on them? You could call the cbet here or raise it but we’re missing too much info from you

I think speculative hands like these play badly out of position. Must be folded when not hit

On that particular board, I would c-bet 2/3 of the pot, and double barrel if required. Your opponent could be calling on a draw or fold. He could have a better hand if he calls or raises.

That being said, 89s isn’t in my range for MP. I tend to play quite tight, so it’s on my button range.

villian is a type who doesnt back down if he have Ace and J+ kicker. he raised 10bb. i folded my card. was not sure should i go all the way because he would not back down and could go all in. as i play connectors from any positions i often land in this situations. thats why thought to ask
