Advice on hands

Playing .01/.02 NL I went from a +10 winner on over 2k hands to a -8 loser (18 lost from my peak equity high). I went from consistent winner to a consistent loser thus I've quit playing for money for now. Closing out my account for now but might return later. My style worked really well which I varied between semi-loose-aggressive and very-tight selective aggressive. Two player types took most of my money: super aggressive players--defined by players who bet more then 5x the BB and quite often and money bulls (players who go all in when they hit a sure thing). Maybe I went on tilt or just got burned out from playing too much. I was hoping to build a bankroll but i was wasting lot of time on it anyway. The super aggressive players basically obviously don't belong in micros because they will bet $1 or $2 on a pair only and most rounds. Of course, you say well just be very tight and pick them off but that is assuming you get a perfect flop or else you have to call an all-in bet hoping the SA doesnt' have anything.

Here are just a few of the ways I lost-- lost pots and my money. Any insightful analysis is useful on whether I played these hands right or wrong. I made a lot of bad plays too but this is just a selection of ways I lost.

I thought he might be on J-10, A-K, or a flush draw. J-10 was right. I was 50/50 J-10 but I thought he might be on AK too. Typical "money bull" play.

I knew this guy didn't have an ACE because he was playing so many hands. I couldn't protect my hand even with the help on the turn and I couldn't put the guy on a hand because I knew he wasn't likely to have AK. Another money-bull play.

I notice a common trend is when I'm betting i have the best hand but by the time I put so much into the pot to protect my big hand I feel like it'd be a loss not to call thus when someone does hit lucky they get payed off big time by time. SOO I thought okay I'll not call unless I have the nuts an all-in bet and as soon as I do that this guy bluffs me on the river and shows me he had nothing.

^^^Aside from not raising preflop, you played above hand fine, just got unlucky.

I notice a common trend is when I'm betting i have the best hand but by the time I put so much into the pot to protect my big hand I feel like it'd be a loss not to call thus when someone does hit lucky they get payed off big time by time. SOO I thought okay I'll not call unless I have the nuts an all-in bet and as soon as I do that this guy bluffs me on the river and shows me he had nothing.

All comments in red and as for the betting size(3xBB), thats how I play these levels.
There is a standard but that really doesn't come into play until I can afford to move up levels or my table starts playing ABC poker.

I agree with most of the points shinedown made, except when he says a minraise is ok because you have an overpair to the board. You should still be raising that I'd probably pop it up to 40 cents or so in that spot.

And for the OP you say

Just because a guy is playing a lot of hands doesn't mean he doesn't have an ace this time. All of his past hands have to effect on the current hand, even terrible players get dealt a big hand sometimes.

Overall you simply need to learn how to size your bets better, there is tons of threads in this forum about it. You'll learn quickly that minraising will lead to you getting sucked out on a lot and you won't be getting good value from your monsters if you just raise the minimum.

Do you keep stats on yourself and other players?

Granted, there are alot of bad players on the .01/.02 tables, but there are some good players too. I recognized a few of the names you were in hands against and know some of them to be pretty tight. If you have stats on people it's a little easier to know what you are up against.


I'm now playing at a little higher levels, but I built a decent bankroll starting at the .01/.02 tables. My style was semi tight - semi aggressive preflop and very aggressive post flop if I hit.

It's hard to play tight when you see people winning with hands like J7o, but it's the only way that I found to consistently win. Don't start calling someone down with a marginal hand just becuase they are a bad player. Bad players get dealt pocket aces just as often as Phil Ivey does.

Steer clear of the uber-tight players unless you have the nuts. If they raise preflop fold anything but a premium hand.

Try to win your money from the calling stations (vp$ip >50% and low pfr). Don't worry there are plenty of them.

If you have a limited bankroll it can get expensive trying to beat an overaggressive, all-in on every hand player (seems like you got into alot of hands like this). You will win your fair share of hands, but if your bankroll can't afford to take a few bad beats from him then you should just play premiums against this guy.



That's my .01/.02 recipe in a nutshell...it worked for me. $1.50 to $200 and counting...

I've identified 2 problem type players: money bulls and super aggressive. Money bulls are basically looking for sure thing and they go all-in. They aren't very discreet but a lot of times I've hammered with a strong hand and thus haven't been folding when I should have been. Looking over my biggest winners/losers it appears that most of my losses have been when others have gone all-in before me and I called. Another thing I noticed is I started trying to lower my raise amount to build larger pots (sweeten the pot) but this let more limpers in, didnt change my post-flop raise size, and thus both factors together maybe led to more losses. I did an analysis of my biggest winning hands vs biggest losers and found that a lot more people seen the flop in my losing hands.

Here is a super aggressive player that caused me a lot of trouble. This guy made and lost about $6 in about 20 minutes. Was this a good lay down? He was raising every single round by huge amount. I figured even if he has any King then I'm beat. I tried to adapt this player and one hand I had hit a flush or straight and just checked but he realized something was up and just checked. I figure converting to a call station against such a super-aggressive player is about the only weapon but still gives them the option to check on the river.

Looking at this perhaps I should have just folded when he raised to 50 cents or checked to him first and maybe called a single 50 cent raise. Also, I should have just called his initial raise but I was not thinking well when this happened.

I don't think he has the set here. More likely he has AJ, QJ, TJ, or maybe an underpair. He could also be playing QT and is on a semi bluff. His check/raise seems like its more of a feeler bet to see where he's at. The set would slow play more often than not with no flush draws on the board.

That said, I think its a good lay down on your part. I might have even laid it down to the check/raise. You have at best 3 Aces and 4 Tens (and maybe 3 Qs) for outs. Definitely not the odds you want when he bets $1 on the turn with only $1.42 in the pot.

You say your biggest losses are coming from you calling allins, the AJs Q3 hand is a good example, sure you had the best hand in this spot and got somewhat unlucky, but why risk almost an entire buyin in a 4 cent pot? If you wanted to play the hand you should have brought it in for a raise, dont get cute with these 5nl players, play tight but play aggressively, dont bluff, with the exception of a continuation bet when your heads up on the flop. Eliminate the minraise from your game completely unless you have a lock hand and think that its the only sized raise your opponent will call.

Unfortunately this left me open to river fishers and stronger made hands or weak flush draws, 3 kinds, etc. This change in my game I think is what made me go from consistent winner too loser. The median number of people who seen the flop on my biggest winning hands was only 1 person and on my biggest losers the median number of people who seen the flop was around 3 people.

Better to win small pots than lose large ones.
You have found a hole in your game that wasn't there before and that's trying to allow more into the pot when you have good holdings but you have found out that it's just better to play your hands strong, it may not let alot of players in the hand with you but when players do jump in the pot, you'll find it easier in figuring out thier range.
