I saw CC had posted this on Twitter and I re-posted but thought this would be a great discussion for the forum as well:

At showdown, player A tables their hand face up. Player B tosses their cards face down but not in the muck. All of a sudden player B realizes their hand was best and flips the cards over. Who wins and why?

B of course - no question. Even if he said "damn you win" first.

It depends on how far onto the table they tossed their cards. If they pass the "bet line" (sometimes it's imaginary) then their hand is mucked no matter what. At my casino if they even touch the line they are considered mucked.

Unless the word "I fold" or if the cards touch the muck by any means then Player B is the winner only at showdown , any cards face down during play that go pass the pass line are considered a fold. Showdown however is different because he may have "accidently" throw his cards that landed face down. Player B is the winner

Personally I’d like casinos to more strictly enforce the rule that if cards go over the line, they’re folded. I see way too many people pick up their cards, push them over the line while holding them, then tap to check.

Then youd have everyone trying to abuse that rule. Now when someone throws their cards passed the line face up I can instantly say they folded their cards face up because some people do that aswell. I dont think it should change at all, I feel that if you think something's up to always call the floor most of the time they will make the correct ruling

I agree with those who said that it depends on how far in front of you the cards are thrown face down...if they were just in front of your stack, then the cards may be turned up, but if they are thrown into the middle of the table, they are folded.

I downloaded the official poker room rules for winstar (where I play the most).
Live Cards at Showdown:
Cards are only dead if the DEALER MUCKS them (paraphrased).

8. Live Cards at Showdown:
Discarding non-tabled cards face down does NOT automatically kill them.
A player may change their mind and table their cards if they remain 100% identifiable.
Cards are killed by the dealer when pushed into the muck.

B, unless the cards are mucked, or over the fold line if one exists at the table.
