So I would consider myself to be pretty good at reading people from their actions in live tourneys, however when I comes to playing with friends I find this more difficult.

It’s hard for me to explain how this is done or what I look for (as for me it is like a sixth sense), so was wondering if the community can help by sharing either their previous experiences or just simplified explanations, so me and other people can understand the key things to look out for at the tables.

Thanks all.

Good hands make people get excited. They cant help it. Better the hand the easier it is to notice. Hands shake getting those chips. Cant get them in fast enough. #Usually being precise on chips counting them stacking them. Not splashing the pot as normal. As soon as they look at their hands they look at their chips. Most common is they keep looking at their cards, like do i really have the nuts. Smiling from ear to ear. After about an hour providing everybody plays and not card dead you should have some idea.

I think that's why a lot of pros cover up with glasses and hoodies. But you be surprised just how you putting chips in can give info.

I play a regular home game with mainly the same people. I have reads on all of them and they are all different.
The key is to note how they normally act and then when they do something different. Some are really obvious; there's one guy that when he has strong cards like AA, KK, QQ, he sits right back in his chair like he's not interested in his hand.

Another is when he is bluffing, he puts his chips in very deliberately in one neat stack instead of the usual casual push and spread.

You're not going to see people start scratching their nose, or have a coughing fit when they are bluffing, but the tells are there if you look closely.

My suggestion would be to pick one player, probably the strongest player and focus on them for a while to try to pick up something solid then focus on another player.

Before playing a live tournament for the first time, I was paranoid about tells. I know that often one's pupils dilate, one may swallow extra hard, and my ears turn red when my blood pressure goes up...so, I guess I should wear sunglasses and a baseball cap pulled down over my eyes, a scarf around my neck and a hoodie to cover my ears...for sure, someone could get suspicious and call the police...LOL.

When playing live for the first time this year in the wsop 2019 in Las Vegas I noticed a lot of tells in regards to many players & Pros hiding their eyes or face with their caps when having a top 3 starting hand.

What a lot of players do is undervalue the positive or profitable value of body language or tells.

Most players don't pay attention to this when playing at a table or don't have the abilities to understand what to look for in body language and tells.

I believe its very important to pay attention to everything that happens at the table. View and scan your opponents as you play. You will gain info or notice something you can possibly pick up on and use for later in the tournament on that certain player.Tells is a must tool to have !

I'm an analytic guy so I analyze their bet patterns. All but the very best players have them. This also works just as well on-line.

I really don't believe that "poker tells" will make you money. Yes, opponents may give some sort of information while playing, but it is different from every player. Unless you play with them every day for years, you will not have enough data to exploit a players tendencies.

This is the toughest part of live poker for me. Cause I rely on betting pattern and bet sizing for online and live.
When I make a reasonable large bet I get stared at for minutes and I just try to act cool. If I have a monster I set it up so I act sad or annoyed that he might call. If I’m bluffing I try not to look up and stare down and acknowledge the other player . My obvious tell is my face looks happy and relieved when he folds to my bluff and my face looks pissed off when he makes a great fold to my monster hand

I have played for 16 years now and YES, poker tells can mean the difference in making the money and not , winning or losing a pot, or winning or losing a tournament.

I WATCH EVERYTHING! period.

Common and best way to pick up tells.
Before betting, look to the left. Grab chips and look left. If someone grabs chips and they often do before you even get your chips into the pot, then they are strong and were very happy to not only call your raise or any raise , and will likely be in the top 5 hands.

Grab chips and look around the table. People pick up their cards, pick them up and shuffle them, turn them to the side, likely will be folding to any raise and are weak.

Do not look at your hand until the action is on you. Often stronger hands will be aggravated that you are taking a few more seconds to call , raise or fold. Look for it. Invite it.

Anyone looking at their hands when multiple suited cards hit will look back at their hole cards. If they do , they are on a draw and arent mentally aware enough to know what two suited cards they have. We jokingly call it a Heart check, spade check ect .

Possible straight out there? Watch and see who looks. They are on a draw.

Anyone who says tells cannot make you money, or arent important I would seriously discard that information.

What you DO with those tells , matters as much as seeing them and identifying them and using them to your advantage.

Best thing I can tell you is, stay out of table talk. Dont talk strategy and pick the strongest player at the table and focus on their tells. Do they slam chips when they are bluffing? Do they neatly stack their chips or do they keep a loose pile .

Tells can be the difference in laying down AK against a dry board against someone who flopped a set.

Hope this helps.

Been playing more live and I like to watch hand action. How quickly and fidgety they use to hand to make a checking motion the more I believe they have nothing. If they are slow and deliberate in there checking motion then it might mean he has something. If the hand is still after seeming the cards means likely nothing. If there is quick motion toward the chips likely wants to bet. Of course this isn’t 100%. I seen player grab there cards like they were going to fold in an obvious manner before it their turn and end up raising I seen players grab their chip and then check with the chip
I know my hand action is a tell so I generally announce my intentions to check or bet. Rather than to grab chip or pat my cards on the table to indicate check sometimes.

Haha haha. This is hilarious [emoji23] I’m sure if you did that you’d be sweating buckets in a Casino. Would it just be easier to wear one of those fake pair of glasses with the massive nose and moustache attached? Lol

This is really helpful. There are a number of things you have mentioned that I wouldn’t have really processed properly whilst sat at a table, so it’ll be good to test and good to see who else may be doing the same.

Poker is a game of Deception.
In Sun Tze art of war, he mentioned: Keep your friend close and keep your enemy even closer.
When not in a game, he is your friend but once you sat each other, you are in a battle which means you fight each other. Fighting an enemy who knows you well is the a battle where you are of disadvantage.
So, you need to know yourself and know your enemy even better.
Making use of this knowledge will benefit you in a game when you sat together.
Knowing what he knows about you and then act the exact opposite way.

Patience. Just think, if you were playing at a table with a bunch of comedians or Victoria Secret models or MMA atheletes or a bunch of professional actors (Toby Maguire types), what would you be thinking? Now ramp up the stakes to thousands of $$ per hand..what would you be thinking now? Finally, pretend the cards are in braille and no one can see...what would you be listening for?
Be creative, maintain etiquette and have fun.:fight:

Try to pick one or two tells from each player at the table and adjust your game to that type of players and scenario. Concentrate in not revealling own tells :)

Takes about thirty minutes. Unless it’sa very tight table and far and few hands play to showdown. Real information has to be confirmed before it’sa tell. Real problem I find is the marginal hams they don’t have a clue. Those tells are damaging because marginal hands become great ones by river.

Biggest tells are with the chips and being.

I have a tendency to raise the same if I’m playing pocket aces or 8,9 suited. So either you believe in the luckiest guy in the world or full of crap. Either way you have no idea. Online I’m much weaker player but pretty much the same betting style.

Seems online luck is more of a factor.

One good tell is when you notice somebody acting, then just figure out is he acting good or bad hand.
