Hi all. First post (take it easy) I wondered what all our 'long-term' poker players thought of committing to cash games or MTT online.

Which format of the game is better to developing a long term strategy on and why?

Of course, a long-term strategy should be developed in MTT, there are fewer risks, and the possibility of winning is a greater percentage of the investment\profit ratio,and a smaller percentage of spending\risk. Thanks.

I read contradictions that suggest the luck you need in a MTT makes it less strategically profitable.

Where as cash you can learn and grind and see consistency in earnings if your strategy is good.

I wonder what you think of this? Cheers

I think with mtt's you have to be prepared for a lot of variance. You need a lot of buy ins in your bankroll to account for the big swings that will inevitably happen. Also in order to really be very profitable at mtt's long term, you have to put in a lot of volume. Your sessions tend to be quite long if you are grinding mtt's. It can definitely be a challenge to bring your A game for hours on end. On cash tables you can take a break whenever you want.

All that being said, I think both can be profitable. It just depends on which suits you better.

I prefer cash games for the freedom (especially regarding time) associated with it

immemorial dispute: what it is better?! better what is suitable personally for you. what format is interesting to you, is suitable for your schedule and your purposes. MTT is more interesting to me, there is a competitive component (it is possible to tell sports).

Cash is easier to play in terms of time commitment. You could devote 10 minutes to a round at a table and be done.

As for strategy, in some ways I think tournaments are easier. Yes, you have to make adjustments for what stage of the tournament, and yes, you have to consider more than pot-odds (ICM), but... in a tournament, you can also wind up short-stacked where the game is more about shove or fold, and that's easier to play.

Ultimately though, I think it's a matter of your play style. I'm just naturally better at tournaments.

And heck, look at Gus Hansen. Kills tournaments. And then lost something like $5M in cash games.

Some tournaments, with a smooth blinds structure (no turbo/hyper), the approach could be about the cash games'.
In cash games your stack is kind of directly connected to your bankroll, so you may lose the entire money very fast, wile in tournaments, the maximum you may lose is the entry fee.
Also read what I've just wrote at the thread below
https://www.cardschat.com/forum/cash-games-11/how-do-you-win-cash-games-423299/ :
First thing, forget the lady luck. If she comes, nice, but don't chase it, specially in cash games;
Bankroll about 50x the table buy-in, or more;
Look around, see the table stacks. Better is to sit on na table where any stack is not much bigger than yours, neither where many players are seeing the flop;
Play only premium hands and big pairs, jacks or better. Avoid big pots, many contenders, with marginal or 'trouble' hands. Position is very important;
These are the basics and we should not deviate from them until we build a solid stack. With big stacks we can play more hands and see more flops, varying your game play.
There are many more to consider but those are the basics for an unlucky guy like me.

Profitable cash games are patience to wait, wait, wait, wait and wait for the hands. Bored (most of the times).

I agree with you.

For players that are just starting Poker , MTT is better choice where they can risk a small amount of their money. A lot less risky than Cash games.

Once you are a better poker player, then it makes sense to develop your Cash game and you will see more consistent $$$

It is good that you try to study both types of game, in the long term you will be profitable in the one that you play better .
