How does the online poker law in the US work?

Being from the UK I dont understand how it works, I know its banned in most States, and some States are legal, but is there a way around the non legal States, with the likes of VPN and so on, or for the more serious players, could remote access work, by renting a room or flat in the likes of canada or mexico and just using software similar to Team Viewer

Also in the legal States which poker sites are you allowed to play on? after talking to some locals in Vegas they said Nevada online poker was a waste of time, is it that bad? or just tht most Poker players in Nevada are obviously live players, in the chat rooms American Card room seems to pop up alot is this the main site for the legal States?

I know the live poker tax is a bit of a nightmare, I think its supposed to be tax free for Britts but I hear of some people having to pay tax on poker tournement winnings and others not, I won a small promotion in MGM poker room this year, it was for everyone playing cash with a full house or better went into the hourly draw and I was luckily enough to win a roll over, I think it was for $600 but I needed to fill a tax form out and they photographed me before they would give me the $600, and 3 weeks after getting home I recieved a letter from the IRS I could not understand it so it went into the bottom draw, if I do owe them no doubt they will see me in McCarran airport sometime next year.

For those of you that are intested, the UK poker live scene is thriving, Grosvenor Casino's one of the Microgaming skins' makes it possible for the working man to enter, or to win a seat online to the live GUKPT these are Poker Tours/festivels usually with 4 or 5 qualifing days before reaching the final. These events go on at the different Grosvenor casinos around the UK most weekends sometimes 2 or 3 at a time, with satellites online from 25p

A similar kind of thing happens with party poker but instead of travelling around the UK they use 2 major venues, Leeds, and the main one is in Nottingham, the main Poker Room holds 45 tables, partypoker holds massive games at Nottingham for the live finals, once again plenty of games well in reach of the working man, are held at Nottingham, to the main event, the UK Millions, the final paid I think it was just short of 5 million UK pounds in October 2018.

I know the other sites also have their own tours around the UK be it on a smaller scale

It would be great to get the US back online, just like the days before Black Friday, but if this does happen, one thing is for sure, and that is there is definitely no easy money to be made anymore, and dont be suprised to see that the skill level online has rocketed.

On the Federal level there is no law banning online poker outright. What is banned is the use of US banks to business with offshore poker rooms.

On the State level, the laws vary from no laws at all to a complete ban.

In the US there are two types of poker rooms, regulated and unregulated. Best not to confuse the two.

The regulated poker rooms involve the player pooling of Nevada, New Jersey and Delaware. Pennsylvania will be added to the mix with more States to follow. Also, New Jersey has over a dozen online casinos already operating including a US version of pokerstars (don't confuse this with PokerStars EU)

When is comes to Unregulated poker rooms they all vary on who they will allow to play. Some don't care which US State you are in (WPN including ACR, BCP etc), while others use geo-targeting to prevent you from playing (ignition, Intertop).

If you want to keep up with the latest laws on the Federal and State levels, I always refer you to PlayUSA website. They keep the site updated with the latest news about legal online gambling. Visit https://www.playusa.com/ for more info.

Hi Shady Slim,

Thanks for the reply

I seem to be a bit more with it now, the paragraph below makes alot of sence now, reading it to me seems as though the future of US poker will be in house only, so even if the US do allow all the States the freedom to play online poker the big player's like Pokerstars, PartyPoker and so on will will be off limits to US players, which means it looks very unlikely that we are going to have a global online game in the near future.

Johnathan Little said in one of his YouTube videos that "Online poker in the US is legal, you just dont know that its legal".

For whatever that is worth.

Yep, appears to be going that way. There will be regulated online poker in the future for the USA and only the USA. I am sure that PokerStars will be granted licenses in some states to operate, just like they do already. But as you pointed out, those too will be for USA players only.

One thing that came to me is what the "rake" will be like. Since the states will want their cut, the online poker rooms will have to pass that down to their customers. More rake? Higher withdrawel fees?
