ZEN-Gaming-Free-to-Play-Online-Poker-012913L.jpg

One of the leading free to play online poker networks, ZEN Gaming, has filed for bankruptcy protection with its future uncertain. The company relied heavily on an ad support platform but has been met with fierce competition, mostly from real money Web poker rooms that also offer the free to play format. Still, ZEN Gaming does boast of having more than 750,000 registrants with over $100k in cash prizes awarded monthly.

I believe Zen was Spadeclub before. Spadeclub was the first poker site i ever played on.

SpadeClub was my first online poker site as well. I couldn't become a full member because I lived in Georgia. From what I understand, they had a large, loyal user base, but still had a hard time turning a profit. Their software was outstanding and there was a strong sense of community on the site. When they went under, they sent most of their user's to CardPlayer Poker(ZEN), which I'm not sure had anything to do with CardPlayer Magazine or the Schulmans. Barry, being CEO of CardPlayer and Jeff having been owner of SpadeClub.

Most players were given a couple months free on CardPlayer and those players with several months left on their SC subscriptions had their subscriptions honored by CP. Most of the players I know played until their free trial or existing subscriptions expired, then left and never came back. A lot of them ended up playing on a site called Grrrinders.com, a web based site, with no downloadable software. You just logged on and played in your browser. Their player base wasn't large enough to support the tournament payouts that they were offering to try to bring players in. But with many of the old SpadeClub players playing there, it had that strong feeling of community that inspired loyalty in it's players.

I personally thought CardPlayer (ZEN Gaming) sucked. One thing that always amazed me about membership sites was that even though all their tounreys were freerolls, there was a surprisingly high level of play on them. With CardPlayer being the exception. I hated their software and thought their customer service sucked. When I was creating my account, their software rejected my name, IntenseHeat, because it was "indecent". I tried for about a week to get it worked out, but eventually gave up. What bothered me is that they just completely ignored me. They didn't try to explain why my name was offensive. They didn't even bother to feed me a line a bullcrud, or blow smoke up my butt. They just didn't respond, expept to send me some generic statement about standards of decency, but wouldn't tell me what was indecent about IntenseHeat.

I don't rememeber what CardPlayer charged per month, but Grrrinders charged $30, which I think is about average for membership sites. SpadeClub used to charge $20. They should have charged $30. They would probably still be in business if they had. I know I would have paid it, given the opportunity. They were worth it. None of the membership sites I've tried since have been. Least of all ZEN Gaming and CardPlayer. I'm surprised that they lasted as long as they did.

Many Casino's that link to online play have used the Zen software. Hustler Casino for example.

I too received money from wins at Zen. When I collected, the policy was to send checks out at the end of the month after you won the prise. So for example, If I won something today, Feb 2, the check would go out automatically at the end of March.

Its just that the advertising is such a serious distraction that I found it difficult to endure playing there. To their credit, they didn't shove the adds down my throat at times so inappropriate as to make me throw up, as some of the newer sites have done.

Zen will survive IMHO.

Did I mention that I never did get the money I won from ZEN? I didn't? That just goes to show how much I disliked that site, that the money they owed me was the least of my concerns.

Zen owes me $145, I think i won those in Jan 2013. When they pay me, I'll play there again. They have pd me everything else they owe me. Are there any other such free sites that pay their prizes that are on firm financial gound?

Zen Filing Bankruptcy?

I have played there quite often and they may claim to have over 750,000 registrants however, I sometimes find it difficult to find players in the late evening. Even their freerolls are not nearly as crowded as one would expect with that many ACTIVE registrants.:)

Is the Cardplayer Poker site ran by zen entertainment? I think it is, and they definitely run tournaments for cash. How are they doing that if they are going bankrupt? x D

750,000 registrants in no way means that many people are ever on. I signed up with them a couple years ago and signed on once never to go back because of the gay subscription format, I guarantee my login is considered one of those registrants.

pokerstars and FullTilt, millions of registrants.... CC itself has almost 95,000 registrants, but I would bet damn near any amount that way over 3/4's of those people haven't been active users.

OMG!!! I LOVE THIS NEWS.
Zen totally sucks and rigs the decks at their site they run for Hustler in order to make everyone watch ads longer. (it took me awhile to understand the motivation to fix a free site - but same as hotmail used to do with sending out their own spam, so you spent more time watching their ads while you delete their spam).
They have me to thank for losing just about every single corporate ad sponser they had for Hustler.
Screw ZEN. Cheat and you pay the price. These morons actually had aspirations to run government gaming sites coming online. Their brand is WORTHLESS. Right up their with FACEPLANT - that's about all they will ever do - run facebook checkers for tweenies
I piss on them all at ZEN.

I'm sure you made each of their sponsors pull out all on your own. With how that post was worded, I can only imagine how much complaint departments laughed when their read your strongly worded emails...

Zen paid up

I just want to set the record straight after my prior message: On Jan 1, I cashed in one of cardPlayers tournament for $10. On Jan 15, I won the Battle of the Ages for $135. Shortly after that, Zen announced their bankrupcy. On March 8, I got my check for $145. So I continue to play there and enjoy it. Formerly, I won some money and a collection of DVDs, which I also got. Beef
