A lot of Twitter-verse furor over the wsop Colossus payouts (link here)

Lots of 'pros' saying how bad the payout is and that 1st should be +$1mil. WSOP folks saying how it's a flatter payout that's better for the whole field.

What's your opinion?

Mine, flatter payouts over a larger % of the field makes this tournament aimed at the rec player much more inviting to the rec player than a 10% payout with a 'standard' top heavy distribution.

Read some of people's complaints and laughed at one tweet. Poker players will bitch about anything.

While I think first could have been more ~800-1mil I think it's fine honestly. 565 for 600k sounds pretty good to me.

Keeps more people in with min cashes which a lot would
Be happy with.

Idk I am def indifferent. I would think first should have been more, but def wouldn't be mad like a lot of people.

You want people to come back? Give them a min cash. Then they can say to their friends that they cashed at the WSOP, they can have some many to cover expenses, they can take that money to play more events or cash games, they can be generally more proud/happy with their WSOP experience.

And to think people complained about top heavy WSOP. Can't please everybody.

Although it seems a tad flatter payout, it's still only paying the Top 10% (last I checked 2,241 paid of 22,374 entrants).

I think its fine the way it is.

This tournament has attracted loads of recreational players and I think the payout structure is good for them.

Why were they offering refunds? The WSOP twitter account tweeted that they were offering refunds.

That would only be for players who registered but did not play.

Plenty of players registered for multiple flights. One could choose to forfeit their stack in a earlier flight or choose to not play a later flight. For the latter they would get refunds.

Or they pre-registered and never showed up to play. Anyone who paid an entry and did not play at all - whether it was for 1 flight or multiples is entitled to a refund.

I agree with the pro's, the pay out structure is hilarious. How ever, the ~650K on top is still the highest 1st place gtd for a $500 buy in. Still, the pay outs are ridiculous.

Fact a pro posted on twitter:
''SCOOPL ME: 22164 runners, 14.2% paid, 1st 10%, 2nd 7.4%, 3150th 0.007%

Colossus: 22374 runners, 10% paid, 1st 5.7% 2nd 3.5%, 2241st 0.0098%''

So the SCOOP had the typical top heavy plus paid out more spots. SCOOP mincash was 25% lower than Colossus. For a live tourney, mincash needs to be larger than an online tourney as most live players have larger expenses.

Yea - shouldn't be comparing it to an online tournament - compare it to other WSOP tournaments.

Agreed. People need to realize the cost of travel and time playing live vs starting up your PC in your own home. It's completely different.

I think first could have been a little more , but min cashes need to be bigger and wider for more people to continue to play.

It's definitely a flat payout. 54th place is getting 20,000$. thats a 40x ROI on the initial 500. Imagine if that was the wsop, 40x would 10,000$ would be 400k, basically 10th-12th place money

Yeah, but when you pay 10% of the field, and give 5,7% to first place i think you can better cover more travel expenses with paying more % of the field. Instead of giving the bottom from the 10% paid a bigger cash.

That's actually a decent example except that your calcs. are off as the two are pretty close (at least as far as the payout range (40x ROI) you've indicated)

Comparing the MainEvent (which last year had 6,683 entrants) to the Colossus (22,374)... MainEvent has only 30% of the number of entrants that the Colossus had (actually 29.869%). So then comparing a place in the Colossus that gave a 40x ROI ($20k) which is actually 46th to 54th) would be comparitive to 13th to 16th spots in the Main (last year's Main, 13th to 15th spots actually paid out 44x ROI & 16th paid out 35x).

--- 36th of 22,374 is ~= 14th of 6,683
It seems pretty close to me.

I think most pros complaining are angry that organisors made double the Money of 1st place winners. they made 1,3 mil from rake alone. i think i m happy with the payout structure. as it wll give many recreational Players a sense of pride that they ve made it to cash in a wsop Events. that s great for Business.

To be fair, poker players complaining about a payout structure is hardly a "controversy" is it? Isn't it just called business as usual? :p

1) Donkament "pros".....ROFLMFAO.

2) Why are they "ridiculous"?

Please explain what is ridiculous about them instead of just saying they arent the same as X and donkament pro Y (who is probably broke and in gobs of makeup and no unemployable) said Z..

I like a flatter payout structure. Whether you run 1st or 8th, making the FT in an event this big is a major achievement. When you've already achieved a (relatively) huge win, the "utility value" of adding significantly more money on top for the ultimate winner, dimishes significantly. Spreading the "life changing" wins further down the field, makes more players happy and encourages them to keep playing (including entering subsequent events).
In contrast, I don't think any payout below 1.5x the buy-in, is appropriate. The player probably spent at least that much getting to the event and entering. Money back has effectively no utility value at all, since the player was prepared to risk it in the first place.

Not a fan of such flat structure at all. There is gonna be an endless queue of disgruntled mincashers and less big winners. They should have put at least cool 1M for eventual winner imo.

I think this tournament did what it said would do, and give the everyday person a shot at a huge payday and roi for their money. I am very happy with this payout structure because now these people withmin cashes will think wow, I can do this again, and then tell their friends... This has been a great tournament to keep up with online duringt he day!!
