Ever wondered what it might be like to open your online poker account to find your have been awarded, for no apparently reason, a seven-figure sum directly into your real money account? Well, that's exactly what happened to a player in France when leading online poker operator Winamax mistakenly credited their account with €1,546,522,16.

The player, Le-requin34, noticed the huge "bonus" sitting in his account on the morning of February 1st, before logging off and going to work. When they logged in again later that day he found the millionaire's roll still sitting in his account.

The player then decided to chance their arm with a few thousand €, losing a little on poker at sports betting, and also withdrew €8,900 of the money over the next week or so. However, on February 8th, the player found his account suspended and as such sought clarification from Winamax as to why the account was not active, as they had not broken any rules.

It turns out that the enormous bonus was of course an error. Due to human error, the players winamax account number "1546634" was entered rather than the correct bonus, a mere €1.82.

Winamax wrote to the player saying the account hadn't been closed, simply suspended until the misunderstanding had been sorted out. They also asked for the €9k which had been withdrawn to be returned - although didn't ask that the player fund the several thousand euros in lost bets they had made during the week.

Currently the player is refusing to repay the money and has said they are prepared to go to court over it if necessary, claiming that they were informed they had a bonus and as such did not act in bad faith and shouldn't be expected to return the money.

Winamax had offered the player €1,000 in compensation for any inconveience caused.

Wow. I had someone accidentally ship me something like $50 on Full Tilt, pre BF. It was a player to player transfer and I had no idea why I had gotten it. Two people ended up coming to a table I was at begging for it back, one of them had a name like 1 letter off of mine. I ended up shipping it back to them, but told them I was keeping $5. That's not anywhere near as much as this guy got, that would just be insane. It's crazy they let this guy cash out a portion of it, you would think they would have caught it then.

Wow I guess the workers at Winamax didn't check this player's account activity when he went to withdraw 8,900 euros. If they did they would have been suspicious why and how a player is withdrawing that much if they haven't even played that much; assuming this player doesn't play much cash games. I wonder if they even bothered to check this player's deposit and withdraw history? If they did and his history showed very little amount of money being deposited/withdrawn then I can't believe someone at this company still went ahead and processed this withdraw. You would have to think that someone at Winamax is going to get fired over this whole ordeal.

If I was in this player's shoes I would have done the same thing most likely, but after the site asks for their money back that is rightfully theirs the man needs to give the money back otherwise that is flat out stealing since it was an accident. I would be surprised if Winamax doesn't end up getting this money back in the near future and wouldn't be surprised if that man is just bluffing about going to court over this.

How is it stealing if they even sent him a message saying it was a bonus. I think he would win in court, not the whole 1.5m but not have to pay back what he took.

edit: I mean he probably would never get to play at the site again, but that's up to the site anyway

Because the amount they sent him on accident wasn't equal to the amount of the bonus that he earned. I wouldn't say he initially stole the money since it was sent to him on accident, but after he was sent an email saying to return the money that isn't his then to me that is stealing if you are going to continue to keep that money.

If a bank accidently sends you money in your account and you go ahead and spend that money even though it isn't your money, they can and will get that money back and I see this situation being no different other then the money being sent as a bonus in this case.

You would talk directly with the owner and what bribe him to keep your silence of a trivial matter over a human error, that speaks volumes about your integrity.

Mistakes happen everyday, I don't think they would care if it got out in the media that they made a human error, the best advertising a site can get would be that they identified and rectified a mistake, showing the public that they are vigilant and quick to act.

I read about this the other day. It's pretty crazy. Lucky for Winamax this wasn't Eric Lindgren's account, lol. I honestly don't know what I'd do in a situation like that...

My opinion is, if the account comes a large amount of money, first of all need to contact customer service to find out the origin of this amount is fair and then later use. In another case, it is a scam

I'm a pretty honest person but couldn't say I would just ship it back. WD some then hustle support for some free money seems like fair game.

Yea the guy can't just take the money and not expect them to want it back. He should feel lucky there even gonna give him 1k even after forgiving the sports betting. And just giving the other money back, To bad he probably already spent it and couldn't give it back if he wanted to

I do not think I would have done a withdrawal for 6 months. Probably would have just went to a high stakes table and had some fun on the house.
