The Amsterdam Court of Appeals has ruled poker a game of chance only two years after another court in the netherlands stated poker was a game of skill.

NEVER NEVER NEVER - sport says you must be physically better than normal in order to compete at a high level - most poker players are fat and lazy and still win regularly - there is no physical exertion at all - NEVER A SPORT - stop trying to make it one, dumbest thing I have ever heard, if you want feel better about sitting on your ass all day long, then get up and take a walk between sessions or something.

Here in brazil is already being processed hearing in the Chamber of Deputies to regulate poker as a sport of the mind, along with that in the same proposal is the release of gambling here in Brazil as: roulette, Black Jack bingo among others ....

Anything you can play while actually holding and drinking beer can't really be called a "sport". Even in pool they have to set their beer down to make a shot. ;)

The thing with many things is whoever has the money makes it happen (the power usually, but lots of money typically is that the majority of times). It's more like if ESPN and pokerstars make a contract, now there will be this 'sudden' interest to call it a sport.

I hope not. Is chess a sport?

No more than darts is. Darts requires coordination and physical endurance is a factor. It's still not a real sport in my mind.

I love poker but it's not a sport:)

As much as I love poker, it is absolutely not a sport. And there is nothing wrong with that. I don't see the benefit of it being labeled a sport. I mean, who really cares? Will you like the game more or less if it's not labeled a sport?

It matters when it comes to taxation and legality (the whole "gambling" thing) but I agree, it really doesn't qualify as a sport.

The "animal game" (jogo do bicho, in brazil) for example is prohibited (except those regulated by Caixa Econômica Federal), but it is not a crime. Everywhere there this practice of this game, but the authorities close the eyes to this reality. Now, the Akkari to say "Poker is not a gambling game and not becomes addiction" is curious. Maybe a light bluff, no? (laughs).

Recognition as a sport by SportAccord would be great for poker. Fantastic.

online poker perhaps is closer to eSports (competitive video gaming). Live poker requires mental endurance which has many elements of sport, existing at the intersection of sport, game, leisure, competition and reality TV (think Survivor).

The harder poker works to act like a sport, the better chance of growing interest / audience of non-players via TV, internet, etc. Which brings advertisers, sponsors and other $$ sources to poker other than $$ put up by the players.
