Well, fulltiltpoker was the straw that broke the camels back. Before Black Friday, several big name online poker sites had problems with former employees using their access to scam players out of their money.
The Individuals and sites are based overseas and as a result, international players have little to no way of bringing them to justice. International courts take forever to make a ruling.

So U.S. law makers, pushed by brick and mortar mega billionaire lobbyist, created a law to try and block U.S. players form making bets overseas by way of computer.
U.S. land casinos had to reapply for operator licence to be placed on an exclusion list. ( most casinos have electronic slot machines, and would be considered illegal gaming sites, but money prevails )
But, you can't keep a good thing down, and online poker is slowly making its way back to America.

Unfortunately I used to love the FullTilt freerolls. They really knew how to do them right.

I see stories in the scandal section of the repercussions of 'black friday' of poker, but what exactly was it?

On April 15th, 2011, the US Department of Justice seized the domains of pokerstars, Fulltilt, and Absolute/Ultimate Bet. These poker sites were suddenly no longer available to US players, their accounts and balances in limbo

As it turned out, FullTilt did not have the players' money on hand, and a huge scandal regarding that site emerged.

In the end, Pokerstars paid off its US players, and stopped serving those players, unless and until it is legal for them to do so (currently, NJ is the sole state Pokerstars operates in the US)

FullTilt's assests were purchased by Pokerstars as part of a $700+ million dollar settlement with the US DoJ. That money was used to repay victims of the FTP fraud.

AB/UB went away, some player money may or may not have been returned via DoJ

The events of 4/15/2011 changed online poker in the US forever

I really liked after Black Friday to analyze how the poker mindset of players who do not play online in offline tournaments is changing. Trying to understand their actions and the logic of their game, I managed to better understand the game and exploit the mistakes of weak players.
