“High Stakes Poker,” which aired on Game Show Network during the height of the poker boom era, was one of the most popular poker shows ever.

Daniel Negreanu created a poll on Twitter asking 'For those of you who loved to watch High Stakes Poker on GSN, what was it about the show that made you love it so much?' we will ask the same! What was the appeal to the poker show for you?

Gabe Kaplan was great. He would explain a lot of what each play meant and how the other players were most likely interpreting each move. He was also hysterical. I remember once when 2 players were talking about how many times to "run it out" ... 2, 3, 4. Gabe made the hilarious comment "Why don't you just run the whole deck ???". I also loved watching the many crappy starting hands these players would play.

Watched it when I started playing poker. Thought I could learn from watching the famous pros
Turns out they play exactly like the local Regs out our casino but with higher bankroll

if Danielbis trying to see what type of TV content people want to see I think when pros review hands that is interesting. Even better would be twos pros involved in the same hand talking about it.

When I was a kid the appeal of the poker tv shows was more of the goofy poker commercials advertising full tilt and party poker back in the early 2000s

1. It was a CASH game, and not a tournament that usually was televised at that time.

2. Most of the big names and personalities played. And they talked and joked a lot.

3. Commentator Gabe Kaplan is not only funny as hell, but also good at poker.

4. Good production and editing.

5. The timing was right for most players that like to watch cash games.

For me I think it was 2 things

1. The personalities on the show and how they varied and created interesting dynamics to watch

2. The commentary, I just always enjoyed the original team so much and they both made the game very enjoyable to watch imo

Watching the best fight it out. Listening to the commentators explaining the thought process behind bizarre looking hands and how they begin to make sense when you understand the history between the players and their level of knowledge of each others play.
