Some of you may know, Washington State was the first state in the US to be dropped first by pokerstars, and then FTP, prior to Black Friday. This was due to a State law passed in 2006, and which survived a narrow court challenge in 2009. Once that challenge failed, the sites decided against continuing to offer play to Washington State. Unfortunately for them, it was too little too late.

Violation of that State law in Washington is at the cornerstone of the Black Friday cases, and the Washington State Gaming Commission worked hand in hand with the DoJ to bring the cases that shut down the big three sites. But now the landscape has changed. With the recent reversal in position by the DoJ with regard to the Wire Act, one by one states are passing their own online poker legislation. Even with Federal legislation, Washington would be still out in the cold under the current RCW. But the people can act to change the law themselves, without help or support of the State Legislature, thanks to the Initiative process.

So, in January of next year, at the earliest date allowed by statute, an Initiative to the Voters of Washington State will be introduced that will carve out an exception to that 2006 language specifically for poker, and create some framework under which online poker can be offered in our state. But that is the easy part.

We will need to gather signatures, our goal is 300K to assure we meet the required 241k valid signatures, by the end of June, to qualify for the November 2013 ballot. It will take a small army of volunteers to collect the needed signatures, but surely this can be done. Once qualified for the ballot, a 60% yes vote is required for this gambling issue, so a real campaign will need to be mounted at that time. Between now and then, we need to rally as much support as we can get.

Spread the word to every poker player you know in Washington to get on board and help make this a reality!

Fingers crossed dear fellow WA State brothers and sisters. I will do what I can to spread the word.

Hate to be the one to be concerned, but I have little faith in the WA State legislature. The self serving/preserving nature of our 'leaders' is historically the only thing that matters to them. Representing the voice of the people is a far second to their desire for reelection and campaign contributions.

Getting this on the ballot would be a godsend. I'm tired of being threatened as a Class C Felon (the same as a child molester) for trying to play 0.50/1.00 limit poker.

Cheers Curt, I'll do what I can to spread the word.

I am on the opposite end of the spectrum... I live in Nevada where the first laws were passed to allow people to place sportsbets, etc online just as long as they are a resident, with proof of course... and the IP address falls under a registered Nevada IP range... I am not one for sportsbetting... but it is nice to know that they have Poker Initiative on the bill to allow vendors such as Caesar's Entertainment (Formerly Harrah's) the ability to gain a license and market their own licensed state regulated Poker Room's... Let's hope this can lead the way (in positive) to be an example that it can be taxed and regulated.

As for Washington state... I hope there are enough people to support the bill to go through... However... it is a Red State all the way so... best of luck,,,

Red State??? Not hardly. WA hasn't gone in the red column since 1984, our governor, both senators, and six of nine representatives are all Democrats. At the State level, the Democrats hold a 27-22 majority in the State Senate, and at 56-42 majority in the State House.

The current law making online gambling a felony was initiated by Sen. Margarite Prentice (D), and signed by Gov. Gregoire (D), both of whom take max contributions from Tribal gaming interests.

This is really not a red state/blue state issue here. The current law was passed as a give away to the tribes. Our governor entered into a compact with the tribes from which the State gets $0, and their gambling monopoly is protected.

That is why it is up to the voters to decide, and why we must always make it clear that Poker is not the same as gambling against "the house", and our initiative only carves out an exception for player versus player poker games.

Good luck with your initiative. Hope it works-out well for you guys.

A lot of people share Moe's misconception that all this online poker mess is always the Republican's fault. As you have demonstrated, that is not always the case. Politicians are politicians, Democrats and Republicans; both/either are always gonna side with whomever offers them the most personal gain and screw the people.

This. Very well stated and my opinion as well 100%. Makes me very angry and heartbreaking sad at the same time.

we will need volunteers in every count of the State of WA to help with signature gathering, this is a daunting undertaking but we can get it done!

It would be if the PPA was doing it. However, they are not. The PPA is focused on national politics at the moment, but they are supportive of this effort.

curtinsea -

Again, I would love helping in whatever way I can to get this initiative on the ballot. I would be more than willing to help collect signatures, help set up rallies, web design, whatever is needed!

I would love to be a driving force for this initiative. As a previous online professional I have a lot of self-interest in getting the word out in making online poker a reality again in this state. I know numerous previous online poker players in the area and would love to get resources together to make this happen!

Please reach out when the time comes.

Perhaps add me on FB - Sean Kraut

Thanks.
