Erm... the Australian government ALREADY banned online poker. Everyone is acting like this is a new thing, and it's not. The Howard government banned online poker back in the early 2000s - the only reason we've been able to play is that no government has bothered to actually enforce that law, I'm guessing because going after offshore companies is too damn hard.

That's exactly the reason there are no licensed Australian operators by the way, even though we've got a bajillion licensed sports betting operators. It's also the reason that the big sports betting operators who offer both sports and online poker overseas only offer sports in Australia - sports is legal and they'd rather have that than poker.

So... I don't want to be a downer or anything but you're on a hiding to nothing trying to fight this, considering it's already been illegal for a decade and a half. Bottom line is it'll only change if the gambling lobby (with its millions of dollars in tax revenue) decides they'd like it to change. You'd be better off petitioning them.

Perhaps, but 888 pulling out of the market now of all times indicates that it is the current legislation is worth petitioning.

Frankly, I am amazed how little attention that this has received in the media; does anyone have any indication how Labor or the crossbenchers would vote?

Xenophon has always been anti-gambling, and the Greens have never been very keen on it either.

You'd no doubt get support from Lleyjonhelm, but nobody cares what he thinks. Same goes for most of the other fringe players in the Senate.

The reason this hasn't received much attention in the media is because it's only a tiny little niche issue and I think you'll find it has pretty broad public support... and based on that, I think you've got your answer on how Labor is going to feel about this: there's nothing in it for them politically to fight this or to fight for carving out an exception for online poker.

Now if the existing casinos and sports betting operators wanted to run online poker sites and they started lobbying for them to be legalised, then I think you'd have a different story.

There's been an organised campaign running for quite some time now: http://australianonlinepokeralliance.com.au/

As for a campaign not voting for candidates who insist on banning online poker... I don't see it having any real effect. Online poker simply isn't big enough here, very few people care one way or the other.

The AOPA's approach of pushing for a win-win resolution in parliament is much more likely to be effective.
