Las Vegas casinos re-opened a little more than a month ago after they were given the go-ahead from Nevada's Governor Steve Sisolak. Now, Nevada’s COVID-19 cases have drastically spiked. From mid-March until mid-June, the state averaged around 120 recorded cases per day. But over the past week, Nevada has reported an average of over 700 daily infections.

Las Vegas Locally, a local insider, asks the question: Should Las Vegas casinos shut down again?

So we will ask the same question! What did you select and why?

I guess it depends on if the protocol is being followed. Most of the videos I have watched of people in Vegas now, they are saying that in the casinos it is 99% of people are wearing masks, which is a very good way of preventing. If the numbers go up, I would definitely close.

The virus would eventually be circulating throughout because of air conditioning. More evidence is coming out all the time that it is airborne. It could easily happen that we will all have to battle this thing at least once anyway. So going to a casino now would be a good way to get it over with.

I'm not from Las Vegas, but I voted no. However, I really don't know which one is the right answer, because it's a new virus and there are no studies until now that shows what is the best strategy. The best option for me is to keep casinos open (and everything else), but taking all the precautions to avoid virus spreading (here in my country the protocol is: use masks and keep at least 1,5-2 meter distance from others).

Short answer? Probably should close again.
Let me begin by saying that I LOVE Las Vegas...and so does my wife, so we can stay married (LOL). I have been to Las Vegas somewhere around 40 times in the last 30 years. I consider it my second home, and considering the amount of money I have poured into it, that second home may be more of a money pit than my first home, even with a new roof, new furnace and two driveway pavings in the last 7 years. Given that tidbit, I am thinking of not visit Vegas until there is a reliable vaccine that is available worldwide, because visitors to Las Vegas come from all parts of the world. I may start to have Vegas "withdrawal symptoms", but my wife and I are seniors and at high risk due to other health concerns, so we will probably return to Las Vegas in 2022, or at the very earliest, fall of 2021. What makes it so tough to stay away are all the emails with great offers from many of the hotels we have stayed at...The Wynn for $109 a night? Wow. But I just can't risk it now.

They should've never reopened in the first place. Of course they should close. If they stay open what they're saying is that they don't care about their customers well being. They are their to make money and if you get sick you get sick.

Of course they should ne closed. If they are open what they're saying is that they don't care about their customers well. But they are going to loose money.

I believe they should be shut down again. Living in the 1st epicenter and knowing people I worked with getting Covid, knowing of people around my childhood home who have died from covid. I know the cost personally of the shutdown and know we will never make up the moneys we have lost and continue to lose will affect my family for years to come. Hell I own casino stocks and have lost money there as well. I believe the only way we will stop this vicious virus is to shut down or we better hope for a vaccine quickly.

Sadly we opened up to quickly and never got it under control. Look at the European nations and you see there cure spiked up and drops to low numbers. Ours flattened but never dropped and now have doubled again. In Europe they are opening up and getting back to a more normal world. Do I want to be locked up again for months? Hell no. Would I do it for the better for all in the country, yes I would. Will it happen, I dont believe it will.

I think we need to do something that will really help prevent the spread of the disease. Recently, it is difficult to determine whether self-isolation actually produces results? A lot is being done, but the number of patients is not particularly decreasing..

Part of it is out of control of the casino, like the videos of people standing shoulder-to-shoulder in the Linq's pool. Unless the casinos are prepared to literally pull people apart to social distance then they need to close to not enable these people.

They should close. There are no protocols that are 100% effective and we must remember that only takes 1 careles person to spread to several and goes on and on...
In this moment avoid contact, stay home, be precautionary.
Poker will be there, jobs will suffer but will be there, as long as everybody work as one, and I say all the spheres, gov, private inniciative, the people as one.
The other altenative is... there is not other alternative.

Concerned but hopefull...

If it gets out of control , the whole virus situation , then ofcourse they should close again . But if not , if the cases are not many or if it's not unconrolable , then stay open . People lose jobs , economy suffers . If they want more protection measures , they csn impose them , and enforse big fines for the ones who don't follow rules . Impose restrictions mainly only at the tables is really weird , or strange .....

Personally most of the US should close. The reason is when states opened again, people got careless by not wearing masks and other things. Thats why there are record number of cases now in states, some being daily it seems like. I wish people would take this seriously and practice social distancing in the states but alot of people, unfortunately, do no do this hence why the numbers keep going up instead of go down.

I live in Vegas and have for the last 4 years. I also work (should say worked since I have been told I will come back but who knows when and have not worked since 3/17) at a casino so my opinion is probably buyest. However, I think people need to realize that Vegas truly is a one trick pony town. Take away tourism and we have no source of revenue (see how Honolulu is struggling as well). The state is still at 20% or so unemployment even with some casinos being open and keep in mind the state is having trouble paying unemployment since the number of claims are huge and they have very little revenue coming in. With all that being the case, the state will not survive being closed for an extended period of time. The stats show that casinos should be closed and Governor Sisolak knows that as well but he also knows he cant close them without people of Las Vegas being screwed over even more financially (not defending her but its why Mayor Goodman spoke as she did a few months ago). This is a damned if you do damned if you dont spot for closing the casinos which is why they havent been re closed. Also keep in mind that if they re close, they arent re opening until there is a vaccine and best estimates for that are early 2021. Living in this town I am not sure this place can hold that long with all the casinos being shutdown.

I think Vegas is OK being open as it is up to you if you want to go there or not and deal with Covid19 in that environment. As we all know Vegas exists on one thing and that is tourism, without casino's being open the entire city is affected not just the casino staff. All related businesses and vendors as well depend on casino's being open.

As I said we all have a choice to go or not so let that be your decision.

GL all & stay safe! :D

This is good to have an opinion from someone who is living it in the city of Las Vegas. I'm so sorry you are still without work. I truly do hope things can get back to some kind of normalcy in LV. It's tough looking at what's happening within the city (via the media) and just wish there was a better solution.

I completely understand your semi-defense of the Mayor's words toward re-opening the city. As an outsider, I had a hard time listening to what she was saying but came to the conclusion she just couldn't find the right words to express her thoughts, therefore, so many were jumping on her for potentially placing her city at a higher risk for contracting the virus. Definitely a double edged sword.

In the end, it has taken awhile for people to really take this virus seriously (and it appears to continue) and hope everyone who walks the city of Las Vegas does their own due diligence and do what they can to protect themselves, their loved ones and those around them.
