He may have been the biggest winner by some distance during poker's glory years, but since Full Tilt opened its doors for business again after Black Friday Phil Ivey has been stuck in a massive downward spiral.
After switching from his classic 'Phil Ivey' alias to "Polarizing" in 2012, he's down a total of $6.22m. Only Gus Hansen (-$17.2m) has lost more over the course of the last 3 years. Almost $1m of that sum has been conceded this month alone, making Ivey the internet's top loser in 2015 by some margin - he's currently down more than the second, third and fourth biggest losers of the year combined.

Fans of Ilari 'Ziigmund' Sahamies will be pleased to hear that the Finn is still flying in 2015, up just shy of $1m and the year's most efficient printer of cash.
The only player who comes close to matching Sahamies' bright start is his high stakes Pot Limit Omaha (PLO) rival 'JayP-AA', who has raked in around $830,000.

Ahh, the rise and fall of the elite. More like ebb and flow, really. Swings, variance, affect all of us, including the top players. Until Ivey walks away from poker, or starts begging for bankroll on the subway, I'll not lose much sleep over his recent downward swing...

He was winning in the not-so-distant past....but yes, in NLH HU and PLO HU the game passed him a little, but what's actually happening is Ivey is battling specialists in a bunch of game types, and that's just impossible to do forever.

He'll play some 2-7 3 times a month or something, but it'll be against people who have lived, breathed, eaten TD 2-7 for the last 5 yrs, and of course at some point he was going to get hammered.

He is still my top player on this planet OVERALL....and remember he's won some viciously huge high rollers to offset much of those losses.

Wow thanks for the update this just confirms my distaste for Full Tilt. I tried to play on there years ago and was quickly turned off between the crappy interface and horrible bad beats I was unimpressed. I wonder if Ivey will continue to play there after this.... I wouldn't!

I think this is a result of the evolution of poker. Unless you specialise playing online at these stakes and keep up with the style of play etc you will be left behind.

Wow down over 6 million? Thats a lot of money. I wonder if there is a time certain players just need a break? You know some time off from the game even a payer of his caliber might need some time off to clear his head. I think there is a difference between addiction to gambling with NL hold em and playing smart and knowing how much money your spending with tourneys and live play. Even the best players in the world might need some time off. Look at other sports there are always off seasons and time for practice and remolding your skills.

Keep your head up Phil!!

Your still the man!!

I don't think he'll go broke. I'd probably buy whatever book he writes when he gets really stuck, along with lots of others!

Sick , these "poker heros" like Phil and Gus are such big losers now

also weird: old fulltilt = Phil wins new fulltilt = Phil loses

(in old FT Phil was an owner!)

I don't really understand, is he playing at such high stakes that this downswing is considered variance to him?
The only other thing I can think of is Phil Ivey's live reads are his specialty and playing online limits that to some extent.
