Could PokerStars Be In Trouble Down Under?

The Australian government has agreed with 18 of the 19 proposals included in the IGA, many of which will look to prohibit Internet gaming Down Under. The report urges the government to:
  • Prohibit online credit for gamblers
  • Set up a self-exclusion list for problem gamblers
  • Install national standards for online betting advertising
  • Introduce “Name-and-shame” register for illegal offshore poker sites operating in Australia
  • Potentially work with credit card companies to block online poker and gambling payments
  • Work with ISPs to block access to offshore poker and gambling sites
With PokerStars currently moving back into the US market in New Jersey, it could be a tricky time. Amaya will not want to fall foul of yet more anti-poker regulation and could pull its services entirely from Australia. Aussie poker players might have to start checking flights to Mexico or the UK if their beloved games are taken away in the next few months.

That really is a heartbreaking news, but it really does happen. but there will surely come a day online casino gaming will be accepted. I guess a lot of bookie brand must start building up their credibility for it to happen.

Australia might ban online poker!?

I just saw news on cardschat that the australian FBI is trying to crackdown on pokersites in australia and could potentially ban them all. This is HORRIBLE! How will we ever improve our skills fast if online is gone? I love playing zoom so I don't want to miss out on that either! Do you think this might actually happen or is it just exaggerated? If it does happen will we see some sites pop up? Because I think america had the same problem but they still have poker sites inside the country. I hope this is passed over and nothing happens :'(

Potential Crackdown on Online Poker in Australia

figured it would have happened sooner to be honest. wherever there is money to be grabbed the government will grab it, they are obviously missing their slice of the pie, so ya i would say it will get banned and re-introduced similar to america. of course i don't really know whats happening, but if past events have taught us anything it's that anything is possible at any time. i feel for those players in australia who may get stuck without a job/income...

No. The Liberals here love their gambling and weed. Gambling here will remain tax free, but your weed will be heavily taxed. casinos are going up like donut shops, AND the Ontario OLG now has a government run online casino site, along with BC, Manitoba and Alberta coming soon.

I agree for the most part but i think the writing is on the wall at the CRA... they are hitting tax havens and poker sites are a good haven for us. its just a matter of time they will tax out of country winnings.

You have to think they just want the exchange on our dollar when we cash out

I just dont get how porn and weed can be legal and poker treated like a disease. Where is the simple belief in the personal freedom to do what we want in the privacy of our own home. What is the constitutional basis in any country for taxing winnings when the government is providing no support for the industry in any way?

I'm not worried at all, We have POLi (Pay On Line instantly) to deposit with on most sites, it isn't a credit card payment, POLi uses your own online banking to deposit direct from your account, so I can't see the government having the ability to stop that.

Also any federal government that tries to do this will only be a one term government like the lame duck fed govt we have at the moment.
