That's the title of the headliner in today's PokerPlayer newspaper. At the end of the Wendeen Eolis's exclusive interview with Joe Barton, she reports this:

"Early in our conversation, Barton told me that President Obama reached out to him shortly after he was elected –the first time. According to Barton, they discussed online poker, and the president said he would sign a Barton-authored bill to legalize poker on the internet.

The twinkle in Barton’s eye reappeared when I asked if the president’s support back then is meaningful now. Barton gave a thumbs up with one footnote; a companion bill to provide for inherent tax provisions will be part of the package."

Here's the link to the entire article:

Super, let's get behind all efforts to legalize the game we love. I think the key angle is the "equally favorable revenue component for government." The fact that poker is regarded as a 'game of chance' comparable to anything like video poker, dice games, etc. is a misconception that also must be dealt with.

As usual, all we can do is wait and let our elected officials know we want the right to play online.

Considering the gridlock in Congress, and that Republicans control the House, I wouldn't hold your breath for this measure passing anytime soon.

Just look how much time they've wasted having totally symbolic votes to repeal Obamacare?

I remember reading that earlier.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but what I remember from that was thinking that the title was very misleading.

I believe in the article it stated that IF it were to make it to Obama's desk, that he would expect Obama to sign it...

I would absolutely love for Obama to sign it, dont get me wrong, but I bet anyone who would write any type of bill would have some sort of expectation it be passed.

Amazing news... It seems to take government so long to do anything these days, I won't get my hopes up that it gets done all that soon, but this definately seems to be a step in the right direction!

Based on what is happening in DC currently, I think it is best to make your bill appear as bipartisan as possible, so having Obama's backing is probably not very helpful as it would turn Republicans against the bill (as the party is basically against everything Obama does) and therefore if his support does exist, it should be kept on the DL.

Unless Obama has/had expressed an objection to internet poker, and threatened a veto of any legislation, his signature on a bill duly passed through both chambers of the Congress is a given. I don't think any of this means much at all. There are huge hurdles for any poker legislation to overcome, a Presidential veto just isn't one of them.

The PPA. http://theppa.org/

There are two bills in congress currently, so I'd suggest emailing your reps and making your opinion known about them. There is really no need to petition when we already have bills to support.

The government is hurting for money, and they are not going to pass legislation?? I'm shocked it hasn't already been passed.
