I Just read through the NY poker bill that is currently stuck in committee in NY and I have a couple of thoughts about it. First, this is the first bill that I have seen (there have been several in the past in different states and federally) that has done a decent job of defining the difference between other games of chance and a game of skill such as poker. When this bill is challenged (which it definitely will be), the drafters left a lot of room to argue why poker is a skill and strategy game. I also like the fact that this bill sets up systems to monitor and regulate the sites that will be allowed in NY, and collects some chances. This not only will help ensure the safety of the players but also sway representatives to vote for it because they are always looking for ways to expand the states revenues. Once it is shown to be a money maker in NY other states will quickly follow like they are starting to do since Colorado topped $50 million in ONE MONTH in tax revenue from marijuana. The drawback is that there are Federal laws that prohibit internet poker so trying to do an end run around the Feds is going to be tricky. It has been easy for the states legalizing pot because the Pres has held back the fed agencies from taking action; we'll have to see if that holds true in 2016 when a new Pres takes over. Furthermore, no one has questioned Obama on his views of internet poker, but I have a feeling I already know the answer. Obama and Feinstien are normally in agreement and I am sure his views are the same as hers (see the thread where she answered an email from one of the CCers on here), furthermore, the Net Neutrality Act is going to give the Federal Government unprecedented and unrestricted control over the internet . Hopefully, the next president can turn around a lot of the destruction that the Obama Admin has wrought and we can get states like NY to get bills such as this one passed. If you live in NY or have friends or relatives who do, have them emailing and visiting with their reps to get this thing out of committee and passed.
