The Mississippi Legislature has reported that State Democratic Rep Bobby Moak’s bill to introduce online gambling has “died in committee.”

Moak is a former Chairman of the House Gaming Committee with many contacts in the Mississippi casino industry.

This was his second attempt to get the bill passed and there was some optimism based on the support he had garnered from the local casinos.

The bill would have protected casinos from online only operators and raised substantial income for the state through a 5% tax on Gross Revenues. The enhanced revenues failed to entice enough supporters for a bill that had come under heavy attack from anti-gambling and religious groups.

Mississippi’s economy is fairly robust compared to other US states; debt is a lowly 14% of GDP compared to nearly 21% in New Jersey which may account in no small part for why online poker should find a safe berth in the The Garden State while further south, it drifts away down the Mississippi.

Let us not forget South Carolina.Another backward state. Its ok to have a strip club on every corner but its a SIN to gamble???I wonder how much revenue the state gets from the strip clubs?I guarantee it's not more than having gambling in the state. With 10% unemployment,it's an easy fix.Totally backwards.

This is the same with Arkansas. We have strip clubs but no casino. There's still dry counties too. They just passed a law allowing the county next to mine to allow alcohol sales on Sunday. Before that people would just drive to Missouri or Oklahoma to get drinks on Sunday which was causing lost revenue for the state. The lottery was finally allowed here about 2 years ago, hopefully casinos will follow. It would be a smart move, especially since the closest casino is literally on the border of Arkansas/Oklahoma, and everyone just takes the short drive and gives that revenue to the Oklahoma side.

What I don't get is how these states that already have brick and mortar casinos in them can't get a bill to allow online gaming passed. There are like six or seven different cities in Mississipi with casinos in them, so they couldn't be that much against gambling. Someone just needs to figure out how to intelligently express a plan for regulating it and taxing the revenue to their fellow legislators. Of course it sounds simple enough when you say it. It just makes sense to me. But we all know that sense isn't common.

I know this is old but I don't think people realize how ridiculous it is here. Casinos have to be built on water in vicksburg, I believe also in Tunica, but they gave a pass to the biloxi casinos due to Hurricane Katrina. If I remember Harrahs and Goldstrike both have water beneath them in some fashion, I think to meet the regulations, in Tunica.

Saw this post and was disappointed. New to the online poker world so I had hopes of something like what Nevada and New Jersey were doing happening here. Ah well. Next time maybe. :)
