News that Jay "Whojedi" Newnum, a popular video blogger and tournament photographer who was caught stealing tips from the dealer tip jar at Foxwoods, has stirred a lot controversy in the poker industry.

Quadjacks reported....

Posted by Coffee January 12, 2014

On January 9, a Facebook post by the UAW’s Local 2121 (which manages the dealers’ representation at Foxwoods) indicated that poker photojournalist Jay “WhoJedi” Newnum had been arrested at Foxwoods for stealing tips out of the dealers’ dropboxes during their December Megastack tournament series. One day later, a story by Pokerfuse reiterated the allegations and cited court documents that indicated Mr. Newnum’s plea, guilt, and subsequent adjudication.

Tangentially, the 2121’s post was reposted into the News, Views and Gossip section of TwoPlusTwo on the same day the Pokerfuse story broke. What has followed has been over 500 posts that have touched on a variety of topics surrounding the event, but even more disturbingly, cries of condemnation and contempt for the existing poker media coverage of the event. The thread has created a sharp divide between the players themselves and those who report on all things poker.

Very important post. Jay needs to be publicly outed especially since his transgression will be off the books in two years. People need to make sure he never gets the chance to steal from a dealer or poker player again. good riddance Mr. Newnum.

A C-list poker personality turns out to be a common thief, that's good for about one paragraph. This outrage that the poker media isn't making more out of it is absurd. poker forum folks sure like to slam people, gossip like a bunch of . . . . It's both amusing and sad at the same time. I think the thread on 2+2 makes poker players look very bad overall.

I was talking about this last night, it's embarrassing. I ask myself "these are the people I am fighting for???" How can anyone take the issue of internet poker seriously when the players are a bunch of gossiping forum nerds??

Letting others know a trusted and prominent member of the poker media is stealing cash from dealers at one of the largest American card rooms is a big deal. Unless crooks like Jay are outed in an open forum they will simply move their con to another venue.

I have no remorse for thieves. Jay Newnum has admitted stealing from the very people he works with daily. He never even mentions those he stole from in his apology.

Would you feel differently if it were your money stolen the week leading up to Christmas? Theft should not be ignored. It looks worse in my eyes that many tried to sweep this under the rug.

Of course I don't condone his actions at all. Frankly, arrested and sent to jail seems appropriate to me. But it's hardly the Obama-level cover up NVG is trying to make it out to be.

Or maybe it is, I didn't read thru the whole thread. Maybe I don't know enough about it to form an opinion. I'm not digging into it either. I can't stand that section of that forum, it's childish and a poor representation of poker players, nothing but bitching and moaning on one thing or another, never anyone doing anything productive towards a solution to the problem they are crying about. The moderators are some of the worst offenders too.

I did see Jennifer Newell's reaction on Twitter and I wasn't impressed with her position, and she brought a lot of grief upon herself from her own doing. But to indict the entire 'poker media' because a couple of bloggers are friends of his and didn't go out of there way to dig into a single paragraph story is a bit much.

NVG is just drama land, if you're into it, that's cool. I'm not. And I don't expect my view of this to be a wildly popular one. Oh well, that's how I see it.

I am not defending NVG. It is usually full of trash. In fact that thread was derailed many times by needless bickering. Don't disregard the message because you have prior issues with the messenger.

I am however insisting that Jay's role in the poker community is being understated by you and many others. He covers large tourneys across the nation and is the tourney blogger at Foxwoods. He has worked wsop events, WPTs, and many other top tier tourneys. If Jay was not such an entrenched member of the poker media he would of been treated much differently. This isn't a random player pocketing 700 bucks in chips or a player refusing to pay back a loan. Jay used his position to steal from a closed tip box after he has reminded players to use those very boxes to insure dealers were tipped properly. He went so far as to use chopsticks with duct tape to pull bills out of the box.

It is a big story that needs to be common knowledge, even if it started in NVG.

He didn't say it didn't need to be reported or should be swept under the carpet. I agree with most of what Curtis has said in this thread.

Is it newsworthy? yes Should it be reported? yes Does it need to have all of this ridiculous drama surrounding it? no

Attacking people for what they do or do not tweet about poker news on their PERSONAL Twitter accounts is ridiculous. Expecting people who do not even report this kind of news - or have an immediate venue to do so is ridiculous. Expecting very close friends of his to immediately jump on the hate Whojedi bandwagon is ridiculous.

While there are some voices of reason and some good posts in that thread - having to wade through all of the bullshit is a waste of anyone's time. :(

I agree that the personal attacks on reporters were out of line, I stand by the fact that the thread(even though full of nonsense) at least got the word out about Jay's actions. He was already after another job in the poker world. If there was a troll filter on NVG it would be easier to digest, but the information provided by a few posters was important.

He stole from dealers he worked with daily. He should not work in a poker room again.

He shouldn't be allowed to work in a poker room again. That's a given.

The reality is, he probably will. After his 2 years have gone by, he will basically be free to do as he wishes.

There are many people who, commit crimes against their employers and eventually go back to work for a different employer in the same business. This goes on all the time.

He has a product to sell, and I'm sure at some point he will convince someone else they need his service.

What he did was despicable, he was everybody's "friend" at Foxwoods. It was this fact that a predator uses to their advantage.

As far as his peers not reporting on the crime, you can't force them to report on anything, although they should. Condemning Jay is what they should be doing, as he has jeopardized the integrity of their chosen profession
