So in the US with the FCC ignoring the American public and trying to jam through votes to get rid of net neutrality, I wonder how, if they succeed, online poker (esp as it slowly comes back legally) will be impacted?

Will ISPs simply block off shore sites, will they charge all sites more money for usable connections, or will they sign backroom deals with certain sites for preferred access? Or will sites embrace VPNs and work around any attempt to throttle or block them?

Most likely the biggest change is poker related packets will be relegated to the slow lane in
favor of streaming services being pu$hed and peddled by your ISP

Screen freezes, drops, increased wait times as each player to act suffers the same crapola.

Generally I would assume, that poker won't be affected too much, because there is not much data to be sent for a hand. Actually every card can be coded in just one byte. On the other hand the servers, who deal with thousands of tables, need a little bit more bandwidth.

But where there is a through, there will come the pigs, as we say in germany. So the end of net neutrality will allow carriers to blackmail content providers and they in return will have to forward those costs to the customers. Comcast and Verizon throttled Netflix until they paid.

Ajit Pai, the chairman of the FCC, is a former verizon lawyer. Does that ring a bell?

Don't think, they will just focus on video and high volume. They will look for markets and profit. If poker get's popular again and ISPs see profits, they will act accordingly. Another area might be the CDNs (content delivery networks) of advertisers, which in return could result in less prices for website owners.

Sounds a little bit over dramatic but actually the end of net neutrality is the end of the internet as we know it, since neutrality is a core principle and made the internet the way we know it.

Net neutrality is the way it works now. Data is send in packages. Those packges have to be handled equal(=neutral). For years, the ISPs (internet service providers) are p!ssed, that content providers make more money with selling services and advertising than the ISPs, who very often provide own content, too. Some of the broadband carriers are cable providers at the same time and don't like people rather like Netflix or Amazon Prime than Sky. So they try to ged rid of net enutrality and be able to charge extra fees for "bandwidth heavy content".

The founders and drivers of the internet wrote an open letter to the FCC. I doubt it will help, siince the board of FCC is comprised of lobbyists.
"Internet luminaries, including “father of the internet” Vint Cerf and Tim Berners-Lee, inventor of the World Wide Web, have a blistering message for the Federal Communications Commission as its vote on net neutrality looms: “You don’t understand how the internet works.”"

Actually I think the FCC does know very well, but they don't give a sh!t. Ajit Pai comes from Verizon and after having done his job at the FCC, he will fall on a veeeeeery soft cushion at Verizon, I bet.

It's done!:(

All we can do now is hope that today's decision gets reversed:(:(:(

The US government keeps sinking to lower and lower depths.

So let's hope they listen to the people, but don't hold your breath. A sad day. Lawmakers are already planning to sue the FCC.

It has to go through Congress. So let's hope they listen to the people, but don't hold your breath. A sad day.

Yup, people including some high ranking politicians are fighting it. Unfortunately it could be held up forever. If anyone knows how to drag their feet it's these people.

Seems it's not all that difficult to buy 3 people's votes:(

Can't see much good coming out of this for the common people, hopefully a reversal is implemented sooner rather than later.

The ISPs can now throttle it if they please or make it part of a paid internet "package"...

it's at their discretion:(

I'm not saying they will do that but they can.

If someone tried to charge as a part of a package that would be terrible.

A cable provider can choose if they deem online poker inappropriate thus blocking it unless you pay extra.

Basically cable companies can throttle, or even block certain websites unless you pay extra.

wtff people should be free to access whatever website they want.
All politicans should support it as well.
How can they change it :O

My two pennies worth is this:
The end of net neutrality is just another means to squeeze some money from the people's pockets. The ways are countless. Personal charges for accessing certain sites or using certain bandwidth, commercial charges to the money-making online companies (which in turn will be transferred to the clients), advertisements that can't be blocked etc. And that is only the financial part!
The serious part is that ISP companies will now have the means to control the content, thus promoting or demoting culture, politics and free exchange of ideas in general. I mean that if you get charged extra for visiting a certain forum, the easy and obvious choise is to stop visiting, right?
This is a very serious and dangerous matter and from past experience, predictions are rather grimm...

Just wondering if any of you complaining about this ever had a problem before 2014 when it was implemented. Probably not

It shouldn't matter too much until providers figure out they can start threatening to throttle sites unless they pay for faster access.

Burger King made a great ad to show, what the end of net neutrality will look like. Check out Whopper neutrality.

Poker won't be affected because it requires almost no bandwith... Very little data has to travel back and forth between the game server and your client...

And NO... they can not throttle your site until You pay more. Because You have a contract with them and this contract usually states how much bandwith You are entitled to use... So the worst thing that can happen is that when bandwith gets rare due to too much demand they will only deliver You the minimum in your contract and assign more to paid services like netflix etc....

This is not neccessarily bad... If You pay a monthly fee for netflix then You want to see the video streams in an appropriate quality... If they stall all the time because Your provider is busy delivering free traffic that sucks...

The end of net neutrality simply means that You get what You pay for... Why should people who only check their mail twice a day pay for the bandwith consumption of YouTube Junkies who download a TerraByte of video data per day?

Would this affect people outside of the U.S or is it just a national thing?

Hope it gets reversed anyhow. :)

It's US only but so many large sites are based there I'm sure everyone that uses them will feel it in some way.
