Sorry to say this, but it is not an "Amazing story"
In my book a homeless man or women has no house or car. I've seen a few peeps that are really homeless.
That is my view on it....

Excuse me, but the story is not about poker player development as an individual, more reminiscent of degradation... You had a good job, bad idea to throw it and start playing poker in a minivan. This is a story about gambling addiction and I am very feel sorry for him..

If I had a normal regular job, I never would have changed it into poker. :(

Your book is wrong - homeless means has no home - has nothing to do with a car. Many homeless people have lived in cars.

While I agree with your definition of homelessness I wouldn't class him as homeless, he is freely choosing to live like this in his van, imo his van is the place he has decided to make his home.

At the least he is being disrespectful of truly homeless people by claiming he is homeless when he can clearly afford a place to call home.

I wish him well in his endeavours.

;)

I guess the moral of the story is, we finally meet a guy who has the guts to say "goodbye boring job, goodbye house which I'm a slave of......I cut the chains and will live a life of as much freedom as I can get".

And I wish him the best of luck doing so.

Finally - someone who is not missing the point.

He is a great story teller and it will be very interesting to follow his journey.

I don't know how in the US, but in Europe quit job to play poker is very absurd idea, if you cannot earn money more than on his job and your living conditions should not deteriorate, only a person who is dependent on gambling can go on it.

you don't have to earn more, you can just enjoy it more. people take pay cuts for happier work hours/environments all the time.

He is taking a journey and is going to share his story with us as he goes - if he had been absurdly happy with his job he would still be there. He obviously has money saved up. :)

I am sure he doesn't intend to do this for the rest of his life.

I have a friend who quit his corporate job and is basically roaming around South America with very little money. He is making friends as he goes and living a life he loves. He posts incredible pictures and it is an amazing journey to follow.

It's all about making choices and deciding on an alternative path in life. Not everyone is a slave to money and "keeping up with the Jones's".

I think stories like these make some people envious because they are stuck in boring jobs with people they don't like and stay because they have bills to pay and care too much about what people will think of them if they step outside of the norm. They don't have the guts to change their lives and therefore resent others that do.

Some might think it selfish or irresponsible, but the alternative is living a life full of unhappiness and resentment. How can that be good?

That's what I take from it. Carlos has joined a movement of individuals and sometimes whole families who opt to live and work on the road, either thru necessity or by choice to escape the rat race. He's what is known as "time rich", which is an appealing thing imo.

GL, Carlos!

Two things come to mind. Mr. Welch has as much right to pursue his dream as, say, a starving artist. He is also demonstrating just how difficult it really is to make a living playing poker.

Cheers!

Homeless means to me, no place to live. A car is a home in my book since I've seen how some live in a car. Aka A salesman lives in his car on long road trips.

He could of went with a tiny house for the same price as the van or even less.
If he is eating fast food all of the time it's not good for his health, nor is laying around all day and playing poker.
Would you be willing to use public bathrooms, every time you had to use the bathroom. I would rather go in the woods than go in a public bathroom

I'm not missing the point of him doing it.:p Would you eat a spider inside of a lollipop, that's the gross out on what he is doing.:p:p:p

And that is just the way you view it - the rest of the world views homeless as meaning not having a home.

You can not travel in tiny house so it would have been dumb for him to do that.

You guys are picking at silly stuff and totally missing the point of this.

I think what some are trying to say is not that the story is not an awesome story more so that the title is a bit misleading and possibly insensitive to actual homeless people, now if the guy is bringing his laptop to starbucks - mcdonalds, burger king for 3 hours sessions at a time using public wifi while bathroom showering and sells 100 off his ebt card to get 50 dollars to deposit online then builds a massive br that would truely be incredible, but thats not the case here, taking nothing away from his story its just the title that is affecting some peoples feeling on the story.
