Really doesnt make any difference. It has always been legal it just means we can now play on sites that are hosted within Australia i.e. Merge.

I'm just hoping the government doesn't look more into and start charging taxes on people winnings.

I am not sure how well the merge sites play but as a small stakes tourney player they must be better than pokerstars and I cant wait to get amongst other aussie poker players. (I used to enjoy $100.00 aussie freerolls on Full Tilt as they gave you a chance to escape the european style of play).

I often get the feeling that pokerstars is gouging aussie players especially when they cant even afford to put on a daily freeroll for us, and as you can see from the chats below a lot of the cards that fall are full on suck outs especially if you are the first player in the hand to go all in.

I'm just hoping the government doesn't look more into and start charging taxes on people winnings.

They'd have to change the entire system (of live and online gambling) if they were to charge tax on winnings, and I suspect they don't want to go down the rabbit hole that is having people claim their gambling losses as tax deductions...

FWIW I'm not surprised in-game betting is on the table (as the article notes it's really only a quirk that it's illegal anyway since you can make them live or over the phone - GG Australian government) but online poker being on the table suggests there's been a change of attidude among the country's B&M casinos, most of which have exclusivity agreements with government on the provision of real-money casino games (including poker) that extend for decades into the future.

When and if they allow this trial, I wonder if it'll be Stars, 888 and Merge or Crown, Star and Jupiters that will be operating the sites we're allowed to play on?

It seems obvious to me that Pokerstars has tightened up financials considerably after black friday (the DOJ did confiscate, and holds hundreds of millions of pokerstars operating dollars) and I think you would be a fool NOT to understand that the small stakes tourneys ARE stacked in favour of the fish (to encourage possible regular depositors by letting them think the game is easy) and that is why you see so many stupid all ins pay off on that site.

If small stakes regular depositers (like me) stop to think about it they would realise (like me) that the odds are actually stacked AGAINST them in tourneys where the software is different to higher stakes tourneys.

I can't wait for this Australian "online poker trial" (because I think Pokerstars will want to have an Australian based office) so that I can make a submission asking whether ANY online poker site uses different software in different staked tourneys stacking the odds against regular depositors.

The federal government doesn't tax us when we walk out of a TAB but I do think there will be a GST (Goods and Services Tax of 10%) placed on the rake and juice garnered by all of the sites and the state governments will know exactly how much to charge the sites for licences after the "trial".

Interesting thought - I could be wrong, but I'm pretty sure GST isn't charged on any form of gambling (live or online) at this stage, and I don't see that changing for online poker. Certainly I've never been offered a tax invoice when I've registered for a tournament and paid an entry fee at Crown, or when I've been raked in their cash games...

LOL

I play on 1 chair, on 1 table in 1 tournament at a time and see rumblings such as that sometimes 3 - 5 times a week.

Given that there are hundreds of tables in each tournament I would guess that there are thousands if not TENS OF THOUSANDS(???) of disgruntled small stakes tourney players who play on pokerstars.

It is a massive (and so far un-addressed) PR problem for pokerstars that so many regular small stakes tournament players (who most probably are regular depositers like me) suspect that they are losing their deposits regularly by way of dodgy software.

It would be a massive financial problem for pokerstars (and their shareholders) if it should come to light that players are losing their money by way of dodgy software and that is the only way they can make a profit from online poker.

All any regular small stakes tourney playing depositor to that site wants is a level playing table (and some the return of fulltilt?)

Hmm I think you may be right.

That leaves licensing as the only way governments can grab their share of poker players money. (is "no money in it for the government" why the USA shut down online poker for it's citizens?)
I can see tattersalls or someone similar becoming a big provider of online poker to aussies. (bringing a whole new meaning to the term "bingo" players)

I doubt I'm the right person to answer the USA question, though I think you'll find it's at least partly a cultural/moral stance, not just a financial "no money in it" one. As Australians we've always had a much more accepting attitude towards gambling than some other countries - after all, we have sports betting and pokies available in pretty much every corner pub in the country.

IMO the main reason we haven't had legal online poker (or other casino games) in this country to date is because the land-based casinos didn't want the competition and even though they don't charge us GST on tournament entires and whatnot, they still pay a LOT of tax, which gives them a lot of sway with government when it comes to what is and isn't allowed.

They had this link along with Nick Xenephon spitting chips on ABC news this morning.
