With the recent attention the Selbst/Mercier prop bet was given and the excitement it created, it got me to thinking, are prop bets based on the winning and losing of a tournament a bad thing? Does it hurt the integrity of the game when action is being taken on both sides?

My opinion: Probably not since most are made in a fun and a competitive spirit usually in smaller fields with high buy ins . (however)

I guess when I look at some of the other bad things that have happened in poker in recent years gone by, based on greed ,and gaining an edge, that when I see action being taken on both sides there's this part of me that feels it can lead to someone taking it to far and hurting the integrity of a game, a game that needs to be cleaned up so that it can be regulated and run again all over the U.S.

what's your opinion?

Its a good motivation for players involved and i dont think its the case but it could imply a sort of possible collusion ..
Lets say Mercier would come hu to win a 3rd bracelet, having involved such a big sum for this prop bet to win 3rd bracelet it could definetly be a discussion about the hu deal, if you know what i mean .
Just my oppinion.

Personally, I love prop bets. Me and my friends make them all the time.

Nobody is forced to make them, so the answer is no.

More than likely they are good for the game. They create excitement for fans watching as well as make the players involved try a lot harder

Proposition bet. In gambling, a "proposition bet" (prop bet, prop, exotic, novelty, or a side bet) is a bet made regarding the occurrence or non-occurrence during a game (usually a gambling game) of an event not directly affecting the game's final outcome.

I googled it not saying I know what it is.

My opinion is that the bet is up to each person to build not only poker players do. Many sportsmen also conclude Pori think poker is not a hindrance:)

I don't think so. There's probably some benefit to having a prob bet in play at the table with extra ICM consideration to take 1st. It's a extra piece of information to play with. Would temp players to bluff more often against the prop player.
