Hey ccers,

I know that this isn't "poker news" per se, but it's pretty big sports news that involves the world's #1 poker ambassador.

I wrote up a little piece with a summary, as well as a suggestion for the new hockey team's name (The Las Vegas Spades :) )

http://cardplayerlifestyle.com/daniel-negreanu-goes-bring-nhl-hockey-las-vegas/

Bottom line, I think this is a good thing for poker.

With poker media's constant wishing for mainstream exposure, I'm surprised that no other poker sites have written anything about the story...(yet?)

What do you guys think?

Robbie

That's an interesting thought. I believe you can bet on college teams but not pro. My question would be 'who gonna watch hockey in Vegas?

I'm not familiar with the NHL rules but I know there is a football (soccer) rule here in the U.K. that catches quite a few players off guard.

Basically any professional isn't allowed to bet on any matches anywhere in the world, even if the match is completely unrelated to their team or anyone they know.

Thanks for reading and for your responses guys.

Glad you enjoyed the article. News has hit Sports Illustrated among other mainstream sports publications.

In any event, betting on sports has been one of the things that has kept professional sports out of Las Vegas until now, but I think the world has matured a bit and it's poised to finally become a reality.

In Daniel's blog post about it he cites many excellent reasons supporting bringing an NHL team to the city.

In any event, should it happen, don't forget to vote for the "Las Vegas Spades" as the team name :)

Hockey in Vegas

I'm with you , they do not care about hockey in Vegas. They have too many other sports to watch.

Not sure about " spades " With all this PC going on in pro sports and the hassle Washington is receiving about Red Skins, I would pick a more well represented name for Las Vegas that emulates the city's history and character. I would focus on it's south western heritage. I would recommend the " Las Vegas Regulators, Bounty Hunters, Mustangs, etc.
I think putting the poker, gambling theme makes it a little hokey.

Not sure there's anything "not politically correct" about "Spades". There's nothing more "hokey" than Anaheim's Mighty Ducks... The Las Vegas Spades is a far cry from that, and if anything, comes far closer to personifying something the city is all about. Bounty Hunters would never fly, lol... Regulators is just hilarious :)

Anyhow, I would've suggested "Stars", with the whole Negreanu association after all, but that's Dallas' team already :)

Think about it, "that Las Vegas team has talent in Spades" ;-)

Sorry Mister 2 + 2 'er. Spades is the ultimate name. Why not go all the way and call it the LV poker stars to get full digs in it. Maybe I can open a team in Reno and call it the Reno Porch Monkeys. I guess you do not travel much there and realize the economic and social tensions with the Latino and black community in Las Vegas and the rest of the South west.

I like Spades, or anything card-related that connects it to the people in the gambling industry.

I do too, but I think that's exactly why it WON'T be Spades - I don't think the league will want anything related to the gambling industry.

Wow are they building an ice rink in Vegas? That would be pretty damn cool. I wouldn't mind going and watching a hockey game while I'm in Vegas. Especially if a fight breaks out gotta love hockey fights :D Props to Dan. N. for doing this. We all know how much those Canadians love their hockey.

Yeah, it's going up behind NY,NY on the Strip.

As far the team name, Daniel made reference to Black Knights, but it appears that the U.S. Army has a hockey team with that name. It makes me think of Monty Python ("Tis but a scratch!"). :)

Las Vegas Spades is not a good name. Unfortunately, "spade" is also used as a derogatory term

I like the idea. negraneu, from what I have observed is a smart, seemingly kind man. I think he will carry whatever he does with a tier of legitimacy.
