I read somewhere that he had only 7% of his own action on the event.Maybe this is the reason, talk about how he win 15 millions and he "only" win 1 million.
Maybe he doesn't want to be hypocrite.

PS:I'm sure that the runner-up speak enough for both of them:)

He took a long time to achieve something like that so why not celebrate? And his post is contradicting to say the least. Its one thing to point out all negativity of poker but then make alot of cash from it? He doesnt seem like a proper role model to me.

1) I think you mean CONTRADICTORY....even then, I am not sure that is the word you want to be using. Maybe hypocritical when describing his choice of vocation...

2) Lots of people make a living off the American Banking industry, and if we've learned anything over the last decade it is that that industry has absolutely no scruples, no interest in helping people, no interest in the US economy and is interested in handouts from the American people when it suits them, and then whines about free-market capitalism when it suits them.

Is someone who then works for a financial institution (a large one) a "horrible role model">?

This One Drop situation has angered me more than it should due to my love for this game. Why didn't he leave poker after he had his eureka moment, and realized it was a "dark game"? (in his opinion). The audacity he has to stand there and take the largest prize in poker while feeling the way he does is beyond me.
In his post he wrote he didn't owe an explanation, I agree, and wish he wouldn't have said anything. Now he is just a hypocrite.
It's like if I go to a marksman tournament, win, then go on to say no interviews please, guns are bad because they kill people. What the heck am I doing there then?

Thanks for posting his explanation, lulu.

I can understand his views and the way he feels he should behave towards poker. I can respect the fact he doesn't want to promote poker, he has some valid points and I actually agree to some of what he says, just not nearly as strong as he does. I just think some people should not play poker, it's not for everybody.

What I definitely don't agree with is the fact he just won a major tournament, he should give interviews and behave "appropriately". He should keep his opinions in private, meaning between family, friends, etc, and maybe even not promoting poker directly himself.

But he should be grateful for his win, for the promoters of the tournament, for the players that participated in it and everybody that made it happened.

He may well have been overcome with conflicting emotions, hence his reaction directly after winning. Think about it... he just beat the biggest promoter of poker, Negraneau... we'd still be hearing about that.

I respect his opinions but at the moment he could have been more forthcoming with due thanks, etc.... that is the proper social response. If he later chooses to downplay the win and examine and promote the downsides of poker, that is the time to do so.

I was just wondering-When you enter a WSOP Event do you have to agree to do a media interview and take a picture if you win an event.
Seems to me it would promote good sportsmanship as well as a promotional thumbs up for the sport of Poker.
Any thoughts?

In what way did he act inappropriately?

I think when he said "appropriately" he just meant, that he should do the interviews and pose for the photo, on his own merit. And not have to be "pursuated" to do either... As a pro poker player who has benefited financially from the game (as he stated in the 2+2 interview,) he should know that interviews and post tourney pictures, come with the territory. Plain and simple. He knew going in, that that would be expected of him if he won, whether he wants to do it or not.... On a side note, I'm sure that next year, the WSOP will make it mandatory of every winning player to do interviews and take photos. Almost as a contract, when you buy-in to an event.

Given his fairly negative view of the game, I don't see why anyone would want him to be doing interviews - at best they'd be ignored, at worst mainstream media would get hold of it and run headlines like "MAN WINS $15 MILLION IN POKER TOURNAMENT, SAYS ALL POKER PLAYERS ARE EVIL BASTARDS"

There's just no upside (for anyone) to him doing interviews if that's the kind of stuff he's going to be saying. There's no point in him doing interviews and lying or saying something that contradicts his personal views either, because you can bet your bankroll that it'll be uncovered sooner rather than later, and that'd make it an even bigger and even more negative story.
