Since Adelson’s fight to prevent the spread of online gambling, many companies looking to expand their online market have had to defend their position on the very tough opponent.
I'm a bit confused by that sentence. Usually you defend your position against a tough opponent, but even then it doesn't really make much sense to me. As someone who isn't from the USA and doesn't understand the intricacies of their politics, perhaps somebody could please be kind enough to explain the highlighted part of the quote.

I see what you're saying regarding the wording of the sentence. But what they mean is what you mentioned (defending against). It is just worded differently (using the word 'on').
