Computer scientists at the University of Alberta in canada have designed a computer program that uses optimal strategy to beat HU Limit Hold'em. Named Cepheus, the program is being deemed "unbeatable."

To read more or even play against Cepheus, you can go to the university's site here: http://poker.srv.ualberta.ca/.

Other articles I found that give more details are here:

Interesting articles. Thanks for that.

Hmm why is it that limit HU is beat but not no limit?
Btw Cepheus is currently broken, I think we win

NL Holdem much more difficult, the computer will go crazy when a professional poker player will do very big bets and all-in...It's hard to figure out when bluffing or strong hands...

Heads Up Texas Hold'em Finally "Solved"?

I came across this research article which I found to be very interesting. I knew that Heads Up Poker was very close to being solved but didn't think we were that close. What this means, essentially, is that if you employ the proper algorithm in your heads up play, you can not be beat (you might break even if your opponent is also applying the algorithm in his/her play but over the long run you can't lose).

Cepheus - Univ. of Alberta claims to have solved limit hold em

Univ. of Alberta claims to have solved limit poker and created an unbeatable computer program - I tried to sign up but received a message the site was undergoing construction or some garbage - will update after I play Cepheus for between 1000 and 5000 hands - I am very interested to see how it goes - hope others give it a try also.

Soo what happens when it plays against its self?

Thank you very much, Debbie! It's so very nice to meet you, as well!

Forgive me for not remembering which thread we may have interacted, I've been trying pretty hard to get these 65 posts (with a little help from my friends) but I do remember your ID.

All the very best to you!!

Yes, but only heads up limit hold 'em with a capped number of raises. Admittedly a very math-centered version of poker, where making the correct statistical moves consistently over time will result in long-term winning, not necessarily hugely profitable winning, but strictly above-zero winning. The computer that can do this math needs over 500 terabytes of RAM. Human brain still wins for now.

How is this even news? Winning limit HE bots have farmed online poker for millions of $$$ for years now. Heads up is even simpler.

Sure this computer might be great at heads up limit hold'em, but who actually plays limit hold'em. No limit is what most people prefer!

limit hold em is a extremely math based game so I am not suprised. I would venture to say in 10 years there will probably be a cpu invented that will solve NL hold em completely. Kind of scary to think about actually.

The PC is easier a good NL player if there wasn't no bluffs but the current technology isn't far enough to read people and read their plays

Not really. It has no effect on live games. Consider that in 1997, Deep Blue beat Garry Kasporov. Seventeen years later, chess is still fun.
