I just tried to deposit on poker stars and got the following message, I have never had a problem depositing before.

There is legislation here banning online gaming, I am not up with all the details, I found this out a few years ago when trying to make an account on Merge and was not allowed to by them, they sent me the info about the Aussie legislation.

It seems like the government has finally got the banks onside.

I have tried visa and Poli and niether will work.

PS Deposit ban

It looks as if it is just Stars atm, I was able to deposit onto Full Tilt, Crazy, now all I have to do is xfer it to Stars.

Curious if any other Aussies have had the same problem.

Personally I'm amazed (though disappointed) that it took this long.

We've had legislation dating back to the Howard government that has made it illegal for poker sites to offer their services to Australian players. IIRC my reading of the legislation was that there were only penalties for the companies, not for players. I don't recall there being any penalties in there for financial providers who facilitate the service, but I could be wrong and it's ages since I've read it.

My read on it has always been that it was a law that was drafted to keep the B&M casinos happy, not one that was ever intended to be enforced. Maybe that's changing? Senator Conroy, do I sense another one of your insane schemes afoot?

FWIW I've only ever deposited once (on Tilt, using POLi, before the crash) and it worked fine. Not as easy as depositing into my Centrebet sports betting account, but no issues.

EDIT: which bank, out of interest?

Just would like to say that I am truly saddened that another country is going to (try) to restrict its citizens from the pleasure of online poker...good luck to our poker playing friends down under and hopefully it is short lived and halfhearted...you both seem to have been around the online scene a good while (based on amount of posts) so pretty sure you don't need suggestions for getting around conventional bank cards...keep us posted

FWIW I do remember reading somewhere in the not too distant past that there's a review of our online gaming legislative framework due some time soon, and online poker (along with live online sports betting - at the moment you've got to place your bet over the phone or in person if you want to bet during a match, which is obviously stupid) is likely to be fully legalised.

Honestly I can only see the B&M casinos touting their geographic exclusivity agreements standing in the way of this. The existing sports betting operators would no doubt love to be able to offer us the game, but there's no way they'll jeopardise their lucrative sports betting licences to do it.

But that was then, maybe the government has had a change of heart? Or maybe it's just one of the banks being over-zealous? Or there might be some other irregularity behind it - did you ever find out what it was Zorba?

I use POLi thru the NAB and have never had a problem until this last time, for some reason the POLi link wouldn't work at Stars but when I used POLi at Full Tilt I didn't have any problem.

Sorry it took me so long to reply.

I just tried to make a deposit to stars again and this time all was fine, what I did notice was that the POLi software has been upgraded, I think I jumped the gun by saying that we were being blocked, at the time all I was going by was the pic in the OP which mentions that my bank may have blocked my deposit.

Phew, good to hear :)

Last thing we need is our government, y'know, actually enforcing its own toothless laws or anything!

I only wish that Merge will ignore the Aussie legislation so I can play some CC buy in games, it was thru getting denied to play cash games at Carbon that I learnt about the legislation.

It was a problem with the money transfer software not the banks, I jumped the gun, but we do feel for you guys and the predicament your government is putting you through.
