Oscar Isaac will star as a military veteran and poker player in Paul Schrader’s “The Card Counter.” The Card Counter will be the first follow-up for Schrader since his critically-acclaimed “First Reformed,” which was released in 2017 and starred Ethan Hawke.

After you read some of the plotlines in the article, do you think this will be a poker movie worth watching?

Paul Shrader- excellent. Oscar Isaac- excellent....

That said, the plot as has been outlined, seems a little overwrought. Perhaps just clumsy PR, but I am not sure whether its a thriller shoehorning poker into the plot, or a poker movie tying to shoehorn action and menace.

Be interesting to hear a broader take on the script as with this first PR release it seems a little contrived.

As has been discussed elsewhere, the possibility of a film about the Ivey/Sun edge sorting scandal would seem a lot more engaging.

Sounds interesting...It'll be nice to see a movie about poker and not just blackjack..

I would rather see Rounders 2 although I can not imagine it being better than the first, like most sequels.

My feelings also. Double dipping into Rounders for a sequel appears to be on the cards, but it should have been made at least ten years ago when the characters would have somewhat of a credible story arc.

That said, with the popularity of Billions and the original (and long standing) popularity of Rounders, Brian Koppelman and anyone else involved will ensure this is a nice pay day regardless, just by getting it made.

As far as I am concerned the more films around the poker theme the better, I love them. Not found one to rival Rounders tho.

Hmmm not sure about the whole espionage/intrigue aspect of it as I think poker is generally portrayed in a negative light on screen. But I'll most likely watch it :) Hopefully it's good.

My thoughts as well.

I hate that poker scenes in movies usually are some weird monster hands, straight flushes vs 4 of a kind etc. Like that's something what happens often.

Agreed. They seem to be directed at non-poker playing public. My father actually mentioned to me once, how great he thought the hand was in James Bond movie... sigh :(

Yes, Casino Royale scene is worst. And they make it seem like 007 is some shark or something, reality he just get amazing hands on amazing flops time after time.

Bond would be so much cooler if he win with hands like A high, or even bluffs.

So far there hasn't been another poker movie that can duplicate 'Rounders' although we are always looking for another movie just like it.

I'm thinking I'll just have to wait till it comes out and decide what kind of movie it turns out to be!

I looked at Paul Schroeder's filmography. I think the film will be shot in a serious manner without humor. His last films did not cause success with the audience.
