Huge tournament like that should have unique chips anyway. Chips are cheap compared to the negative publicity.

Counterfeit chips

ATLANTIC CITY, N.J. (AP) — New Jersey investigators say one or more people used "a significant number of counterfeit chips" at an Atlantic City poker tournament, and have canceled the tainted match.
In today technology I think you would not get away with it. So would you do it?

I wouldn't risk being banned and prosecuted just for a few extra chips in a tournament. On the other hand if I had a team of math magicians to go count cards at the blackjack table, I might be more inclined.

Who would risk using counterfeit chips in tourney?

Not just in the tourney at the local pub. It has happened at the Borgata Winter Poker Open in NJ. Not sure if they know who did it. What kind of poker player doesn't realize someone will catch this? It must be a poker rookie to try this.

They'd probably have to go to the cameras to find them being introduced to the tables. I believe most casinos are using RFID or similar technology in their cash chips, but I'd be surprised if they were going to those lengths with tournament chips though because they've got no cash value.

i'm surprise that a casino like that would allow generic chips to go around. i think in the wsop they use different chips especially with the year stamped on it. fake chips or chips that doesn't belong happens once in awhile at my home game that i go to.

Things like this should be expected to happen, there will always be crooks in the crowd, bad as it sounds everyone isn't honest although the vast majority are. Maybe these tournament directors should ready themselves by bringing sealed boxes of chips to the tables, then have a person observe each table at the end of the day, to help safe guard against any introduction of phony chips to the tournament.

What an asshat. Or group of asshat's as the case may be. Thousands of cameras, tons of crew on the floor, and lots of keen eyed poker players/dealers. This has "No intelligence" written all over it.

Makes me wonder if the "asshat" made it to the final 27, or if they colluded with someone so they could claim that they didn't profit from the action.

I wonder how they found the counterfeits? ... I suppose the numbers didn't add up at the end of the day?

I just read where he tried to flush the remaining counterfeit chips down the toilet of his hotel room at Harrah's. It clogged the pipes and when they were fixing them they found the chips and alerted the Borgata.

He is from Fayetteville, NC about 35 miles up the road from where I live.

Borgota Open cheaters.

I hope they find out who did it, find out who did it soon, and put everyone involved in every possible Blacklist that they can be put on. No--they should start a new Blacklist banning people from Las Vegas and ALL other gambling-legal cities and the people who did this should be the first names on. Of all the idiotic, brazen, chickens***, hairbrained, ludicrous, hate-able schemes...wtf, people. What the ever-flying f***.

People with that much stupidity and greed don't belong in this world. At least...I'd like to say that, but... *shakes head in disgust*

They still haven't decided what to do with the rest of the money.

"Customs agents have been investigating Christian Patrick Lusardi since mid-2012, when they started intercepting boxes of counterfeit DVDs from China heading to Fayetteville homes, according to a court document."

"The court document noted that Lusardi recently received a shipment from China labeled plastic chips."

Cant wait for my refund :p

Borgata had so many issues with this tourney besides this that I would like to address.

1) SLOW dealers. I am not talking 15 hands per level (30 min levels) I am talking 4-10 for some. It was BAD.

2) Dealers not knowing the game. Kind of falls in #1. One hand it was all in Ak vs Ak and she thought it was a chop before a flop ha.

3) Registration. This was mega tilt worthy. You are running a 2000 man tournament and you have 2 people registering them all? What a joke. The line was backed up so far and no progress was made. This is only the 2nd year I have been to this (one back in 2012) and nothing has changed.

#2 and #3 are inexcusable.

With the caveat that I've never been to the Borgata and definitely wasn't at this tournament, though, I'd like to suggest that #1 is rarely the sole fault of the dealer. In a live game, it's the players that make the biggest difference in how many hands per hour you see.

I'd have thought getting in 10 hands per level when you're only playing 30 minute levels was actually pretty quick - that's averaging three minutes per hand, including shuffling, dealing and all player action. Doesn't take many tanks or even pauses for thought to slow the game right down. The dealer can hurry things along to an extent, but unless the tournament has a "shot clock" on player action then there's only so much they can do.
