I keep seeing posts where players say you must use hud or some other software to improve your poker. What is it and is it not cheating to install something alongside your poker program?

I use and prefer Poker Tracker 4 . both offer a free 30 day trial so download both and try them out to see which you like. Holdem manager 2 uses a lot of CPU processor so if you have an older computer get pt4 because it is optimized a lot better.

I prefer HM2. 30 days trial.
And of course this software is not forbidden, with some exceptions.

No it's not cheating at all, as these programs are only using hand history, which being analyzed by special algorithms and software shows you some statistic hanging under the name of each player. Every statistic is based on diverse formulas and can be very different more common like just counting how many blinds someone have at the moment, or VPIP (percentage of how often someone plays his hands instead of throwing away) or PFR (percentage of raising preflop with his hands). It can be also very specific stats like re-raise on a cont. bet on a flop or attempt to steal from SB vs BB and then call after re-raise. You could use pre-defined statistics or configure them by yourself.
It's not a cheating, cause it doesn't tells you the right decisions, it only organizes information from hand history to nicely showed statistic, which could be a great advantage indeed for someone who know how to use it.
There are also some mathematical help in those programs too, such as equity calculator or ICM trainer. But i would use them carefully, as they are forbidden to use at some poker rooms, while playing or just having a client opened. For example poker stars look at it very critical and you will get a warning from them instantly as you try to open any Equity Calculator.

I am using a PokerTracker 4 and very happy with it. It is light weight, functional and has even Mac support. However it's a matter of taste what to use. Holdem Manager 2 is a great software too. By the way, you can try them both for 30 days free trial, to find out which you like more or if you need it at all, before you gonna to buy it. :deal:

By the way, those programs are not only for showing statistics while playing poker, it also has powerful function of analyzing your poker progress, replaying hands and finding your leaks. For example at which situations/with which hands do you loosing most money/chips and so on. Also they help you to convert hands for posting them on forum for analyze.

p.s. If you decide to use HUD for your games too i have to warn you not to repeat a mistake of many players, who starting to use such software without learning about how to use it proper and often loosing their head completely relying on that software. My advice to you, when you use it, first rely on your own feelings and make your own notes on a player and only then compare it to HUD stats. Cause it is only software and stats can be mistaken, especially if there are less than 200-300 hand seize in it.

thank you Andrew i'm actually looking now. It seems all the programs do is tell you where you went wrong? I don't see any benefits, am I missing something? The one review said if i'm not using programs like this, I'm way behind <BR /> To everyone else, thank you so much for your feedback.

Ofcourse this programs can be usefull a lot. Anyway, i still know lots of people who play without any helping programs and they still can win the field. I also don,t use any software. Also depends on which soft you will use. Holdem manager and poker tracker is a good decision, but also there are some programs that better not to use, if you don,t want to have problems with your cashouts.

Is this useable on an ipad or just a desktop?

I'm convinced both PT4 and HEM2 are complete garbage as far as user-friendly software goes. The interface with PostgreSQL is potentially very problematic unless you happen to be a programmer and the user-interface is archaic and awkward. Sure, you can learn to use it, but I can just as easily say you can learn to be a nuclear physicist.

What really gets me, though, what really grinds my gears, is that the support staff at HEM seems to treat every problem as a user-created issue. Nothing is more enraging than struggling with a software problem for hours on end and the help you finally receive says what's essentially tantamount to, "I'm sorry, you're probably too stupid to solve the problem".

The real magic this company has performed though is that through their market monopoly they have managed to pass off the program's flaws as sophistication thus granting their customers a sense of elitism while simultaneously establishing an entitled relationship with their customers that allows them to treat the baffled with scorn. Pure corporate gold and a public relations coup of the highest order.

The program works well and is powerful, but breaks in unfathomable ways and accomplishing any particular task can prove more involved than one would prefer.

I tell ya what, though. I'm a pretty unhappy camper these days if my HUD is not up and running.

(For the record I'm not optimistic about HEM3 either).

I tell ya something else, I don't think I've ever despised a product or a company more than I do HEM. Bioware and EA don't even come close and they butchered my favorite game franchise.

Everyone looks for their options to make money ... I, in particular, prefer to read manuals, and not play with HUD and those software; because I consider that when I play live later I will not have that help ...
I see it very artificial .. only one way of not having emotion, it must be cold; I compared it, something like that, like conquering a woman with words and gadgets from a friend.
