I have notice that I play better without a software like holdem indicator or holdem manager. Maybe im not using the stats well, however at micro stakes and free roll tourneys I find out I play better without them.

Anyone else notice a change in play with or without software?

I've never used any of it. When youve played a long time it becomes second nature. I've tried a few but they all are just too much for my eyes and I dont enjoy the game.

It's quite the contrary for me. I just cannot play confidently without a HUD. Even as I play only small stakes, I do find useful to have some stats handy especially when multitabling. Also, PT4 keeps automatic notes of certain hands (for ex, when a player calls a 3bet OOP with a thrashy holding) that helps a lot when you don't have the time to take as many notes as you would like to. Last but not least, the sw helps in showing hole cards at showdown even if the villain mucks his cards when losing and that's quite valuable information for future spots IMHO.

The use of the HUD is 100% optional. Some players find themselves more productive when they use a HUD, others find themselves less productive - you should not let the software interfere with your workflow, it is there to help not hurt you. The HUD cannot make you a better player, your playing skill is internal within yourself - the HUD's job is only to make you more productive, so you can either focus on multiple tables at the same time or focus on other things in your life such as a web browser, TV, or talking with your family rather than placing all of your attention on a single table. Microstakes users will get the best experience with a HUD because they frequently play at tables where you rarely see the same players. Nosebleed players who play vs the same opponents frequently may not need a HUD - because they know their opponents intimately. The person who is writing this post on behalf of the PokerTracker team uses a HUD less than 1/4 of the time, while playing single tables heads up he prefers to disable his HUD and focus on the game flow... it's all a matter of personal choice and your prefered workflow - there is no right or wrong answer.

Used the free trial of PT4 and found it really useful to get to understand ideas like %VPIP better but free trial has finished and no longer using it as it isn't worth it at the stakes/volume I'm playing

We would counter that the use of a personal tracker and HUD such as PokerTracker 4 or Holdem Manager 2 is more useful to a microstakes player than it is to a professional mid-stakes player. The tracker is a learning tool, it can help you to help teach yourself how to find the flaws in your game, lose less, and win bigger pots. Its a small investment in your future, it is less than the cost of dinner for two in most major cities to help you to help yourself become a better poker player. Whatever path you choose we support, but its good to know that these tools were built for players just like you in mind... the experience you described perfectly fits the target demographic for our tools.

The cost of purchasing it would be pretty much entire online bankroll, but it is a tool I have found extremely useful in the month I had it. Hopefully that month improved my game enough that I'll be able to afford it sooner rather than later!

I really think the answer to this question is that it's mostly player dependent. I have used and love PT4 however it isn't available for every site I play on. I've had very good results on BetOnline this year where PT4 isn't available, but that doesn't mean that it's because I don't use a HUD. It's more likely that BOL has a fairly weak player pool and my skill as a player has improved slightly.

My personal opinion regarding HUDs is that I shouldn't expect it to make my decisions for me. What it does is provide me with very organized information with which to make my own decisions. There's a significant difference there, folks...

Where I think many of us have fallen short is using PT4 to learn about our own play outside of our sessions. Analyzing our own player data to determine our leaks, our weaknesses, and to underscore what we're doing right is more important - IMHO - than the HUD during play. This is where I miss PT4 with my play at BOL. I'd love to see how I'm doing statistically even though my results suggest I'm doing well. (Most likely, there's a LOT I could do better!)

So, I'd suggest that whether or not you want to use a HUD, the software will be quite instructive as to your play and for that reason is a real benefit for any player.
