Hi everyone,

I have a few questions about PT3, which might be asked and answered before, but I just couldn’t find it.

Actually, normally I play at pokerstars from my desktop, where PT3 has been installed and works perfectly.
Just lately, when not at home, I sometimes play at my notebook, where PT3 has not yet been installed, but I intend to do that pretty soon.

So here’s the questions:

- after installing PT3 on my notebook, will I be able to still import the hands/tournaments I played on my notebook while not having PT3 installed yet.

- will I somehow be able to get both the databases from my desktop and notebook, together in 1 database, so I will have 1 file for my results.

Hope someone can help me out on this.
Really appreciate your help.

Yes. Just make sure your poker client is configured to save HH's and not delete them any time soon (set the date to 365 days or whatever). If your poker client has a maximum short period (like 30 days), just be sure to copy them off to somewhere else, then you can direct PT to import from that folder later.

Theoretically and technically, yes it's possible. Practically, you need to have varying degrees of tech ability depending on which apparoach you take. There are a few ways to go about it:
  • You could use an external drive that you could move back and forth between PCs. This of course isn't terribly convenient and might not always lend itself to portability (like playing in an airport or a coffee shop), unless perhaps you use a large USB thumb drive. It will require a custom installation or reconfiguration of PostgreSQL to point to the data folder on the external drive.
  • Similar to above, if you only play at home and just want to move between your regular desktop and your laptop in another room, you could setup a home network and either share your desktop database folder with your laptop, or if you happen to be a tech geek with a server at home, you could host the database on the server. Either way would provide access to the same database from both PCs.
  • If you go mobile outside the home only infrequently, you can declare your desktop or regular database as the master or primary, and do a backup/restore to the laptop whenever you travel. Have PT3 on the laptop archive your hands after import, then when you get back to your desktop, copy those archived HH's over and import into the desktop database. Repeat the whole process next time to go mobile. Not very convenient either, and can be error prone, but isn't too bad if you only travel a couple times a year.
  • There are some tools available that will let you sync databases, and there is built-in replication available with PostgreSQL, but these are more advanced approaches that might require more effort or skill than you're willing to provide.
Also, you probably want to upgrade to PT4. PT3 is EOL and no longer supported. I'm not sure about PT4, but I know HM2 has a cloud sync feature which is designed to help keep database instances in sync, though I've never tried it for that.

Thanks dmorris.
Your explanation is very clear to me.
I'll consider the options you mentioned.
