I have a Logitec and a Microsoft mouse. The Microsoft is the low end budget wireless kind. The Logitec I was given with a good keyboard, so assuming it is ok, but it is old and the buttons are starting to fail. The Microsoft is there in case of sudden battery failure, I always have a second mouse ready. But with my Logitec dying, I need a new one. I dont want to spend a fortune but since I find that the Microsoft has tracking problems sometimes, I need a better one. I have no idea what to look for, as well as what to consider. I have a mouse pad, and a white painted steel cabinet. The surface is smooth and flat, white glossy. The mouse has tracking problems with the pad as well as directly on the surface. The pad is a freebee from a bank, cloth surface.

OK, I think that is enough info. Is a smooth glossy surface and a cheap cloth surface the reason for tracking problems (possibly?) or is it the cheap mouse? Or both??

What do I need to consider, and how inexpensive can I stay and still have a mouse that will be reliable with multi tabling?

It's just a crappy old mouse I'm assuming. I haven't had a problem with a mouse on any surface other than glass(duh) in a VERY long time. Even my crappy wireless mouse for my laptop is able to track fine on carpet(although not very comfortable to use...).

You would be fine with just getting your average Logitech. The M705 is a good mouse, or you could go with this one: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16826104346 Might be more your style. ;)

I have had the Logitech M305 - using daily at work for almost 5 years.

One time a couple years ago it seemed to be giving me problems but after throwing it against the wall from 4 feet it has worked like a champ. (Totally True)

Sometimes dust will give you tracking problems, as well as hair.
Check for both, before getting a new one. :)

OK, I ordered 2 logitechs. 1 as back up. They have on/off switches. I started having a back up in case of battery failure and it is a great thing IMO. The battery goes on one, switch the other on and off you go. After doing some internet research, it looks like the lower budget Logitechs are pretty well loved, by poker players as well.

Sadly I needed a new mouse. I had a terrible day on Friday, and after some bad beats, bad play and then the tracking problem the microsoft had, it took a small flight through my room, which ended at the wall. The poor mouse didnt survive.

And I thought I was past that.........

Thanks for the replies!!!

I've got a few Logitech's & a few Microsoft (stand. ones M305).
I use one of those mousepads that 'supposedly' give you longer battery life (it's a greyish-toned surface with small triangle patterns on it & the surface of it feels something like a 'really fine' nail file would feel like (the steel fold out kind).
This pad works better for me than anyother I've ever used (it's now extremely old, have tried out some others but keep going back to my old faithful & just use cleaner on it to keep it clean).

For batteries I use those lithium ones made for cameras.. that supposedly give you 8x the life.

I like the shape of some of the ones out there on the market (ie. a logitech one, & something like Microsoft Comfort Mouse 6000 or Logitech Performance Mouse MX) but I don't like the buttons on the side of the mouse (by thumb) as I'm sure I'd be hitting them accidentally quite often. (wonder if you can de-activate the buttons?). Shape feels good on them.

I used to have mouse troubles but now I use an optical mouse and touch would never have any tracking problems.

Look into getting a mouse that uses Laser tracking instead of optical (much more precise and tracks better).

Thanks all for the replies. I am waiting for the 2 I ordered to arrive. I will post about how I like em after a couple of days of use. The say it will take a week to get em, but I doint think it will take that long. Its an ebay shop and I think they just say that so then when you get it in 4 days you give a good feedback. I hope anyway.

PO, you can disable those side buttons. I had a mouse like that and kept hitting the buttons by accident.

go to : (on windows 7 anyway) Control Panel/Hardware and sound/Devices and Printers/ Mouse (should be a direct link to "Mouse" under Hardware) and the disable control is in there

All the extra buttons on mice are usually programable.

Got my logitechs. Good, but the USB sensors have to be in the front USB slots or they dont track so well. But in the front they work great.
