hi i just installed hem2, im curious how do you clarify a blue fish from a green fish. My stats from over 1600 hands shows that i am a blue fish. I think its due to my vpip, however my ev is just under my actual profit, im thinking im doing ok if my stats show that i am ev+. I also think my high vpip(48% somehow) is because i am playing only 6max limit and some nl but mainly been on the lhe wagon the past few weeks. Does it make sense that it would say im a "blue fish" and my ev is well into the plus or so i think. Am i missing something here? I would expect my vpip to be around 30-35% in limit games and a bit less in nl for 6max. anyone that can help, maybe give me a few pointers on how to use the software would be greatly appreciated. thanks

I think you'll find that the "blue fish" is actually a whale. Somewhere in the upper 60s for VP people seem to change from a fish to a whale, but I'm not sure why. Maybe it relates to another stat.

i think your right i was plying in some fr tourney today and everyone at my table sat out so i stole there blinds for an hour and my vpip was at like 70 and i was a whale lol. But ya hem2 is awesome im stoked. my vpip is down to 40% now which is good, i dunno how or why i was playing so many hands lol but id say on average im sitting around 27% vpip in all games in the past 2.5 k hands, i posted this at around 1.5k hands. Ive also installed leak buster which is sweet.

What is or isn't a "good" VPIP depends on way too many factors. When you're starting out and learning the game, you don't have much control over those other factors and it's best to play a tight game and keep your VPIP low. 27% for FR NL is pretty high in that case, and approaching the high side for 6-max.

Once you've developed strong post-flop skills and have an edge there against most players you're up against, then it's encouraged to loosen up pre-flop in select spots (certainly more IP than OOP). I've seen some very good players with 30+% VPIP in FR or 40+% in 6-max, with the vast majority of that being IP. But post-flop skills take longer to master and you'll lose a ton if you try to do too much too soon.

HM2 displays the auto-rate icons based on fixed stat criteria for an average player, so it's not always going to be accurate. It's just meant as an indicator but until the sample size is pretty big it will switch around as players tighten/loosen up, become more/less aggressive, etc. You can also adjust the default criteria for the icons.

Comparing your EV results is not a good indicator of how well you're playing. The EV line is only for all-in scenarios -- you could be running good in all-in EV and still be playing terrible and leaking money all over the place. You should be looking at winrates in bb/100 or (if multi-tabling) bb/hour. Or for LHE, BB/100.

My gut would say, given the nature of the questions you're asking, that 27+% VPIP is likely too high for you unless you are strictly playing a lot of 6-max and/or LHE (not sure what a recommended LHE VPIP is as I don't play it, but I'd imagine it's a lot looser game).

ive been playing 1 year, i feel as though i have at least decent postflop skills(could always be better). I have tightened up alot, i downloaded leakbuster which helped quite a bit. My grade when i first followed leak buster was all Fs for the most part. Now there all As except pfr and vpip due to me playing pretty loosely when i first had hem2. My vpip was 48% when first posted this, mostly from 6max limit, and ya even that is way to much im told it should be around 30% anmd it is now at that point. Either way thanks for the reply definately something to think about. I must also note that since playing a vpip 20ish and pfr 15ish style i havent really achieved anything. I think i can just play better when i loosen up a bit(maybe 30ish vpip 22-25 pfr). Another reason i think my vpip was so high is because i switched servers. I went from terminal(filled with fish making it more comfortable to play loosely due to implied odds) to ipoker where i find the average microstakes 6max game to be for the most part nitty with few (awesome) exceptions.

i havent yed much fr, 95% 6max so still on the slightly loose side, leakbuster says your vpip should be between 20-27.9% i believe so im happy with 27 or lower. So i highly agree with you
