Are you a late-registration sniper?

So I was reading a thread earlier about when the best time to enter a tournament was, the majority of the answers seemed to agree that early on towards the start is typically the best time to join in most situations. That had me wondering though - how many of you out there will look for those late registration MTTs that are in the last level or two of registration to join in depending on how far from the bubble it is. I've done this multiple times trying to make a quick buck, or an easy way to turn a ticket into cash. I've heard of some people getting as lucky as registering and end up ITM before they even had a chance to play a hand. I feel like it doesn't work out for me most of the time personally, I prefer to join in for the long haul. But how many of you out there profit from taking advantages of these types of situations?? Any big wins out there from your late-reg sniping experiences?? Thoughts on why this is considered a bad idea in your book?

I do enjoy max late regging every once in a while if I notice the tourney is very close to the money. Often times the starting stack is now under ten big blinds, making max late regging a gamble because I've noticed at least one double up is usually required to squeak into the money. I have never had any big wins unfortunately. Usually a max late reg will result in a min cash or a loss for me. If you get quite lucky with a couple of double ups then a deep run is easily conceivable from max late regging, and you would've saved yourself hours of play by not regging earlier!:D

I never late reg myself but I hadn't realised that you can be in the cash almost straight away. The reason I don't do it is because you are straight into shove mode and therefore need good hands and luck right away just to survive.

I like to hop in about half way if there's a really long late reg. Like if it's 3 hours, I'll hop in around 1.5-2 hours. UNLESS I actually have the time to hop in and wait out a really long late reg.

If I do have time to start from the beginning, and grind up 2-3x from starting chips, it's usually easy to prey on the people jumping in at the last second, who are shoving wildly trying to double up. After 1-3 hours you should have the stack to cover their shoves, so just wait it out for the right coin flip to call.

I like to late Reg. A lot of times I end up sitting for three hours playing solid poker winning a fair amount of pots and all I have to show for it is like 5k in chips from a 10k starting stack. There are obviously more fish because the pond is bigger in the early going and you can get lucky and accumulate a real stack but often its just a slow grind.
Then when you late reg you can literally triple up in the first orbit of hands. People are ready to gamble.

I just stay away from long late registering tournaments. Don't have the focus to last a long time. Use to be able to last, but those days are long gone.

well i used to hate the long late registrraition that ACR has then i entered late into some and actually found that entering when the blindas are higher is a better field to play against for me because alot of bad players are eliminated. So i ususallly look at the starting chips and the average chip stack and if the averrage stack is not more then three times the starting chips ill consider entering/

What would you consider a non-late registration for ACR?
I'm usually playing micros so nearly every tournament I see is 1.5-3hours, sometimes even 4, unless it's turbo.

I'm assuming some of the higher buy-ins might have shorter registration periods?

I usually like to register from the beginning, I feel that I can have a bit more control over my game, but if I do it later I think there is more pressure to get chips

I've been trying to register about half way through late reg every time. The blinds aren't crippling versus the starting stack and each tournament doesn't feel as long and draining. It's been working out for me as long as I make sure to take the break time to walk away and relax.

The way I look at it is, it's money or time.

If you want to save time, you have to pay money and you will be coming in with a weak stack.

It's a fair trade I think to join late if you want.

Late Registration

I prefer to register in tournaments before started

Eventually we end up recording before but generally prefer to register at the beginning you enjoy more opportunities over the blinds

I think the chances of making a bigger stack is better when it inertial the tournament and not along the registration phase

but I think this decision is personal some people prefer to register later

I prefer to late register.
Because it's near ITM & waste less time to play. My biggest win is to get 1th.

I have been in such situation a couple of times. There was cheap tourneys at PokerDom, I've found out that it's easy to join in during the pre-bubble time and get some money. I have not win anything big, though. It is tough to get ITM in such situation cause it's push/fold stage for you when you join the tourney in late stages, it is even harder not only to get ITM but to get top 5 or win a tourney. That's why I'm not a fan of this idea. Better to build your stack from the beggining. Personaly, I don't like late registration at all. I think the best LR time in not more than 10 minutes or even zero minutes. :)

At the local casino where I play, they allow late registration for quite a long time. Personally, I don't like that. The tables are very sparse to start and there isn't a lot of chip movement. Because of this, I don't like to start immediately at the beginning. I like to jump in around level 3 or 4, right around when the antes start. I think this is a nice balance. I have considered occasionally waiting until the very last minute and just trying to double up right away, but I'd be a bit disappointed if I did that and busted out on my first hand, especially since I'm generally playing tournaments with $200+ buy ins !

I actually saw it the other day in person, assuming that's pretty rare though. But yeah you're not wrong, if you're not in immediately you're basically gambling that you'll be able to double up within the first round or so. Here's the story that I told in the other thread about that late-reg that bought right into being itm.

"So this just happened to me the other day actually - I forget the exact numbers so I'll be making them up, but what happened was I was in a Tourney with like 2 levels of late reg remaining and we were getting close to the money with 244 total entrants, 43 players remaining and 36 places paid. The next person registered and when it became 245 total entrants the prize pool expanded to payout 45 people instead of 36. When this happened late registration immediately ended, AND one player who busted right before the bubble prior to the new player (45th place) was also paid even though he was already out... Not sure if they got an alert or anything saying they placed, I'm curious what happened on their end. But yeah - here is a real life example of this, late registration ends as soon as it reaches ITM."

I watched a tournament's lobby today to see about how long it takes to get into the money on ACR from when late reg ends and the bubble burst. It took about 20 minutes to lose 15 people, and all the people who registered in the last level only had 5 blinds. So you pretty much need a double up otherwise it doesn't seem too viable in most situations.

If I'm going to late reg with < 10 BB, it's mostly for fun. I wouldn't do it as a general strategy. You could probably min cash if you get lucky, but I don't play tournaments with the hope of min cashing.

I do late reg, one in awhile, but only because I have a friend who is a MASTERSNIPER> he does sniping almost exclusively, and his sharkscope proves its very profitable. as well as cuts hours off your game!

Hi, I feel that it depends what you want out of that particular game at that time, if just about the $ , well cents mostly, then go ahead , it's free , out of 10 or 20 late snipes you should get lucky at least some of the time ( 10% ? ) ,
For me though it's about practice, yes even in freerolls (pronounced shove - rolls at times) , practice how to navigate these, I always keep this thought in my mind, "consistency is key to great poker" , and so i keep trying, when i cash 10 out of 10 i will post here , i think it's doable, if i had uninterrupted time I'm sure very possible, maybe 5 day 1 and other 5 on day 2 , or maybe only play one a day for 10 days ... ? Lol

As an extra note, i think it's harder to win when late Sniper entry, i have had a few times just made itm and then out soon after due to small stack huge blinds (we should call it sshb) , and got the feeling that i could have finished higher (even won) if only i had more time to play (chip up) as there will be some real monster stacks on the final table at times 250k+ etc lol, so yeah that feeling of regret at not winning sucks , more so with the knowledge that the person who won perhaps chipped up a lot in the early levels

It all depends on the type of tournament, and its speed.
But when entering the late stage of the tournament you are playing with the minimum stack at relatively high blinds. This makes the game more aggressive, and you will face the big stacks. If your goal is to win the tournament to start the tournament you need in the early stages.

I don't like late-registration games.Although couple of times even won. They play very aggressively there. The game will go only if you're lucky in the first hands. And your bankroll will be several times higher than other players
