This hand is from this years WCOOP event. I'm trying to figure out what might be his reasoning for shoving preflop with 54 off from UTG with 60 big blinds but cannot think of anything plausible, maybe he was bored, or maybe he just remembered he had a date with his GF so decides to shove any two like those freeroll players until he is eliminated?

It's because it was a rebuy event and he's just trying to get a bunch of chips in play on his table so that he has the chance to have a huge stack when the rebuy period ends.

Is this a common practice? I understand some people will shove pretty wide because it's a rebuy, but do people actually shove with the expectation to lose just to add chips to the table and hoping to get them back down the line? Interesting, honestly never thought of that.

$200+ turbo? That's crazy, I'd never play in a turbo for that much money, but then again, I hate turbos.

Thanks for the replies. I'm a NL4 player so i don't know much about tournaments especially rebuys. I only play Merge daily freeroll
so i'm used to seeing players shove any two cards but i was surprised to see one of the best players doing that.

So he's tripled his chips, what now, keep shoving weak hands or start playing normal poker?

you need a huge stack to compete in rebuys, You simply have to either get lucky from 1-2 buyins, or just go nuts until you have a good enough stack to compete once the rebuy period closes.

Yup, this. If you dont do this, you shouldnt be playing rebuys.
If you dont like the "etiquette", dont play rebuys. Always makes me laugh when Im doing this and I get people moaning, sitting there after 45 minutes with their starting stack calling you a donkey, cracks me up.

Lol when I watched the hand before reading the comments I was laughing my arse off. However makes sense, very interesting strategy that I wasn't even aware of because I don't play tournaments let alone rebuys.

When I was more of a starting player, I saw this one donkey in a 10r on Stars who was just shipping most any chance he got, fairly consistently through the rebuy hour. As a result, our table became loaded with chips and he ended up with a fair amount, even though he spent uber units doing so.

Obviously I felt the need to check this donk's stats at break and came to find out that belowabove was a pretty decent MTT player.

Personally, the uber-aggro rebuy style has never been my style but it does work for some.

I remember reading an article a few years ago where Daniel had a misclick in one of the WCOOP events. Not sure if this is it. Probably not tho they said it cost him most of his chips.

Yah not too bad with both SCOOP & FTOPS titles. The WPT Bellagio Cup 1st for $1.3mill not too shabby either, lol

lol. Chip dumping?

That's like saying there should be a rule for when people get it in bad and be classed as chip dumping.

Not bad etiquette at all in a rebuy, in fact it's bad etiquette to nit it out and not gamble in rebuys as you shouldn't be there if thats your plan ;)

Besides which, it builds HUGE prize pools, exactly what we want!

Is this a common practice? I understand some people will shove pretty wide because it's a rebuy, but do people actually shove with the expectation to lose just to add chips to the table and hoping to get them back down the line? Interesting, honestly never thought of that.

Yeah absolutely.

Regardless of "expectation" to lose it's pretty much gamble first few levels for the most who know how to play rebuys. You need a big stack to compete latter stages. Even if people know they are up against AA pre in a rebuy and hold some random hand, they dont mind gambling as there is no tournament life yet.

$200+ turbo? That's crazy, I'd never play in a turbo for that much money, but then again, I hate turbos.

It all comes down to BR management and actually what you can afford. For the most of us, it would be out of the question to play a $200+ full stop but him playing a $200+ rebuy is like playing a 10cent rebuy to most of us.

Not mine either. You don't need to play like this to cash in these MTTs.
The ones I play in don't put you back at the same table after you re-buy anyway.

He only had 40 big blinds btw but still a weird play. Even being a rebuy event, I don't see the point of that play when you are sitting with 40 big blinds.

I mean really...at least pick a better position to make that play. UTG? lol

Just goes to show you that even "pros" make horrible plays.

Getting lucky is part of the game.

Again, it's because you want to build a prize and chip pool, and if you get lucky you also double up. It's entirely standard in rebuys. It's not even remotely close to "chip dumping" or bad etiquette, that's pretty absurd.

The pros, and Negreanu especially, often approach these rebuys with 30+ bullets. So if it's a $200 event, he's bringing $6000 to buy-in with. That's the strategy from the get-go, and you can only buy-in until the rebuy period ends, so with 30 bullets allocated you're going to be getting it in very often.

he just wants to play deep, and believes the deeper the table the more it is to his advantage

Personally I'm happy with people who are looking to double up this way (probably not happy at $200 a pop cause i don't roll that deep haha) But the first hour i'd just lay low and watch the table action. people will be worrying about building large stacks, and that AA or KK isn't going to lose all the time. I just sit and wait for my spot, if it was meant to be i'll take the pot down, and laugh about it all the way to the bank. I love the rebuys personally. especially if i run good on one buy in the first hour. I used to play them all the time on UltimateBet. Plus the payout is well worth the aggravation of the rebuy period, great way to build a bankroll.

That might of been me, those were the days, that 10r was sick. I remember blowing 250 on 1 and cashing for like 50 or something

I remember a 2005 $1k wsop no limit event he re- bought in 12 times. I can understanding it for him, part of his bankability as a sponsored player is continuing to be relevant in the public eye. Winning events for him is more then just about cashing in a given tournament. It's about both sponsorship money and prize money.(although I'm sure the prize $$ is still the most important factor for him).

My question is when you double up in the tournament early.. do you continue to do such crazy plays or do you say ok I have enough chips, lets play normal.
