Hello all. I was wondering if anyone here will be playing in the events next month. I'm trying to get out there myself as it's only an hour or so from my house but several obstacles lay in my way.

1. I'm no longer rolled for this level since I just started coming back a year or so ago and part of me wonders if my play will be affected even though I've played this level many times.

2. My schedule is crazy and would be a tremendous burden on family to help with kids (wife works crazy hours).

3. The buy-in, $365, is steep and asking my wife to understand is difficult. So far I've brought it up and she just gives me the look... You know that look. I even said if I make X amount from poker this month and she still gives me the look.

So I guess I'm looking for advice for her or for me lol. It would also be interesting to meet any members if I'm able to swing it.

When the wife gives you that look, it's over! If you're not sufficiently rolled for this level, the worst thing you could do is play in the event. You will feel so much pressure just to get a min cash that it will affect your play and likely force you into mistakes you normally wouldn't make. You need to have a clear mind and a clear conscience if you're going to play in a tourney like that. Good luck if you do make it.

I wouldn't upset your ship over it. Its difficult to come out on the good end of things with unsettled and unnerving issues just below the surface. Some are psycho enough to bee able to operate without conscience, I'm not one, I cant play without a clear head.

Great advice guys! Much appreciated. Isn't it weird how we many times know the right answer but don't take it own advice?

I took her out to lunch today and chatted about the game. Apparently I was getting the look from my wife not because of the money at all but because of the inconvenience of having to move schedules around and whatnot. About the money she just said that she trusts my decisions on those things and knows I'm not just being frivolous. I found a one day event, most are 2+, on her day off that totally solves that problem.

I am leaning towards playing with the caveat that I begin to build my roll more in the coming months as opposed to cashing out as much. If I do play I'd certainly put this into the taking a shot category which is important imo to keep things fresh and exciting. Hopefully with this plan I can be properly rolled for other tournaments of this nature in the future. I'm on track so far this month earnings wise so fingers crossed it continues. Thanks again! Will update if and when I go.

I think you made a few great decisions, and it's great that you sat down and discussed it with your wife. Communication is key in any great relationship! It sounds like you are on a good track with your poker and your relationship. Keep up the good work! And best of luck in the tournament!

Thanks! Yeah the biggest point of confusion was she thought I wanted to go to Oklahoma for two weeks! lol. There's no way that would ever work. Thanks for the words of encouragement. I'm on track to beating my monthly goal so I should be much closer to being properly rolled. We'll see though. Just gotta find more hours to grind is all. :D

I hope you make, get to play and everything goes great! Didn't want to seem like a negative Nancy, I just know how hard it can be for some to see poker as skill, or to give it any cred at all.

Best of luck!

Thanks man. My wife knows it's skill. She also knows luck is involved. She also knows I may run into a better player, make a poor decision, or just get unlucky. She's been with me long enough to see all of the above. Lol. Evans for the support!

I'm doing event #4 only, Jan 10th. It's the only one day tournament and it's on my wife's day off so it works out perfectly. What about you?

I was looking more closely at event #1. I prefer deepstack games. But my fiance wants to go to Winstar instead, so not yet sure what we will do.
Best of luck to you!

Thanks! Yeah I'd much prefer event number 1 but it is what it is. Go to Winstar any other time. This is the wsop! LOL

That's what I'm thinking! But my fiance is new to poker and I think he's intimidated by the WSOP. I'm trying to talk him into doing one of the less expensive satellite games to get his feet wet. After he is there and plays something, maybe he will feel better about it. He's really very good and I'm sure he will do better than he thinks.

For anyone interested, a backer approached me and offered to stake me so I'll actually be playing in two of the tourneys. I'm just trying to decide on which other one to play. Woo!

Well, we have decided to play the Thursday morning satellite game for event #1! Kind of a compromise - if we do well enough to get into event #1, we stay and play that. If we don't win our entry into event #1, we will drive over to Winstar and play the evening game there. And if things go well, I'm trying to persuade him to go back for another tournament the next week!

Nice! I so badly want to play event 1. I'm trying to work scheduling out now but don't know if it's possible. I also coach my kid's school basketball team. Let me know what shakes out. Maybe I'll see y'all there!

We are headed up there in the morning, so I was just wondering if you were able to work it out to play event #1?

No I can't play 1. I've got a bunch of middle school basketball players counting on me to coach them. It just wouldn't be right. Tell me how it goes though!

Yeah. I haven't really taken a shot in a long time. Really since I started getting back into poker. So I guess I'm kind of treating/testing myself.

I didn't do very well in either the Choctaw or Winstar games. Neither one of us cashed. But it was a lot of fun and the play at Choctaw was very good. It was a very good competition. I got killed on a pair of :js4: :jh4: and just couldn't come back from it. I want to go back sometime when I am properly rolled to pay full entry into the tournament, instead of just trying to get in through a satellite game.

Best of luck to you too! Let me know how you do!

Sorry to hear about that. I fully expect the level of competition to be premium. That's who goes to these things. Regardless hopefully you enjoyed yourself! I'm excited and ready and will totally let you know how it goes on Sunday.

Well I didn't cash unfortunately. And beats happen even live. But the good is the cash games were soft enough to get my buy-in back so I'm back to square one.
