Title is straight forward.
Woudl you play, live or online, a tournament without antes? My local live tournaments don't offer antes at all unless its a special event tournament...

It depends on the blind structure, not a deal-breaker to me.

The live tournaments are:
5k starting stack.

20 minute blinds.
25/25
25/50
50/100
100/200
200/400

etc etc

Wouldn't mind all that much, normally these local games have a good amount of clueless gamblers.

I would need to know the blind structure through hour four.

If they go 100/200, 200/400 is it then double every 20 minutes and 400/800, 800/1600, or does it go 300/600, 400/800, 500/1000?

For the former, after 3 hours you would have contributed 6,575 in chips and the blinds would be around 800/1600. Most people would be short stacked and would be shoving anything reasonable from any position.

I prefer to have the antes in an online or an organized live game. I have played in some live charity events and hated the antes. Spent too much time finding out who anted cause no one knows how to keep their chips in front of them and not toss them all in the pot.

:D Antes...

...the epitome of online "random" number generator [NL/TxH'Em] games.

Been there, done that.

Miss a registration, just to get on a table 2-5 "levels" LATE registering in on a ~9 player table...... got one person that has a 20,000+ stack and the rest are sitters. Start w/ 1500 chips and the blinds are +100/150/75a+ and he shoves with GARBAGE on all hands no matter what just to knock you off the table.

F>>>K ANTES!!! (and F>>> the "random" number generator for THAT matter!...FIFTY-TWO CARDS MY M#$##$@ F$#@$#@$ A$$!!!!)

Small-blind/Big-blind should be the ONLY factor to entice betting/gamplay when it comes to online "random" number generator poker.

Confucius say: It's better to be an a$$#ole than the whole @$$. (...and you can probably tell what one usually I am :ciao: )

Let's say if it's a Hyper turbo when you can and no antes. It's actually unnecessary. But if the tournament is in normal mode, the ante is necessary. But it is in my opinion.

Ante need to at a later stage of the tournament the people who love to pull the time understood that it is necessary to pay.

3/6, 4/8, 5/10 :)

For those who are asking why I would want to play with antes, it's simple. Ante's make stealing so much more of a viable strategy then without. Alot of the "pros" hate playing without Antes. Negreanu for example refuses to play a tournament without antes. Not saying I like ante's because they do, just saying the general consensus for a well structured tournament seems to include antes, from what I can gather.

I couldn't play a tournament without antes. The first reason being because of time. Online and live tournaments would take twice as long. I would also fear that the bubble would take a significant time to burst as many short stacks will know once the blinds have passed them, they won't need to worry about losing their chips for another orbit. The final reason being because of the inability to steal the blinds and 'antes'. Without antes, trying to steal won't be as profitable. Around the bubble in an ante tournament, big stacks will try and abuse the short stacks by stealing their blinds and antes as they don't want to bust near the bubble. Without antes, this would not be as possible.

At online its quite ok without antes, you are usually multitabling etc.
But at live, the antes helps a lot to break those "sit-outs" hoping for min-cash and willing to wait hours for it.

Yes, and i have, The most important thing to remember in these tournaments is that you can wait FOREVER! I have seen many players in those tournaments wait until they had 2 or 3 blinds left and come back to be big chip leaders late in the tournament. It is incredible how much of a difference the antes make, You really can wait and wait and wait and wait! Without the antes you are just being blinded and really you can wait til u have 2 blinds and get in with a really strong hand. I have played these about 10-20 times and done really well in them, but i always tried to steal too much, not realizing that i am not getting the normal value from a blind steal as i would in a regular tournament with antes, So really there isn't much reason to steal and get yourself into unnecessary hands. Just wait until you have really good hands and you can make it deep in these tournaments easily.

I imagine the game would be slowed down quite a bit, and I tend to avoid that whenever possible. Not a deal breaker, though.

Hi Luke...........In this blind structure I would not mind if there was no antes as this is a pretty hefty blind raises every 20 mins so this would mean that folks would be short pretty quick so it would encourage action. In effect making peeps play, which is what the idea of antes are.

How have you got on in em? Gl Marc

Antes really don't make a huge difference for me. Idk in the end it's mostly about post flop play so antes just don't make a huge difference

Terribly! was 2 from the bubble last time, but because of the quick structure you never usually see the same names in the payouts.

Here in Curitiba, brazil, all the clubs make their regular tournaments with the first six blinds without ante and the seventh level onwards, we always have ante.
In major tournaments, ante ever happen on Day 1, always on days 2 and 3.

I like tournaments ante by accelerating the game a bit and always ends up eliminating some weaker players and only play hands-awards.

Let me guess - 15 minute blinds as well, right? Enough slow players at table, your lucky to see 2 hands a round before the blinds double.

And yes, without antes, you will see guys hanging in with 2 bigs, slow playing to make the money.

It sucks.

On the one hand it is good to play without antes, but on the other side of the game will lose appeal.
