OK, maybe not the worst, but this was pretty dang bad.

Playing in the APS Quarterfinal, two people go out in one hand on my table and we get moved to the final table. We're down to 8 players. Seven players get tickets ($48), the 8th gets $7. We arrive at the table middle of the way through the hand and the BB thinks about it on their time-bank. So, there's no excuse that they didn't know what the real situation was.

Blinds are 200/400 with a 40 ante.
SB: 1,163 (2.9xbb) M = 1.45
BB: 13,014 (32.5xbb) M = 16.27
UTG: 6,280 (15.7xbb) M = 7.85
CO: 7,865 (19.7xbb) M = 9.83
BTN: 11,390 (28.5xbb) M = 14.24

Players ante (40x5)
SB posts 200
BB posts 400

Pre-Flop: [Pot 800]
3 folds, SB raises to 1,123, BB has to call 723 more, BB thinks for 20 seconds, folds.

BB Chat: "Don't want to risk doubling him up."

:banghead: :banghead: :banghead:

Yeah, if BB called and won, tournament is over and we all get tickets. If he called and lost, SB has 2,446 chips (6xbb and M<2.7). As it was, SB ends up with 1,723 with no risk (4.3xbb and M~1.9)

I am not normally a tournament player, but that was a REALLY bad fold. It's not like calling and losing was going to cripple the BB, nor was it going to give the SB any better placement in the tournament (everyone who moved from my table had more than the CO).

Didn't matter too much. SB ends up going broke a few hands later. It was still amazingly bad.

So $723 for a $1923 pot? Yeah I would call with any two cards but I've seen nittier quite a few times. Like not calling $423 for a $1923 pot, I kid you not.

Although BB's stack size should make it a no brainer.

If it wasn't a satellite bubble with flat payout & was a regular bubble then for sure I could see a fold here by BB but in this situation it's pretty ridiculous.

Yeah, I think I would have auto-called there. Although sometimes I'll call with cards outstide of my normal playing range to try to eliminate someone, I do hate to double the shortstack up on the bubble.

I think you are under the mistaken impression that all the people at the table know about strategy.

I'm calling with anything there seeing it doesn't hurt me at all. However, I could see the logic of the BB if he had something horrible like 2 7 (off) or 2 6 (off) as I might fold with either of those 2 hands and just let the SB blind himself out.

Yikes

Well, I despise doubling up a short stack. And I will not call so much as one extra chip if I know I am beat in an MTT.

That being said, in this situation, if I were playing live, I would have called without even looking at my damn cards!!!!! So then, playing online would have been an inst call as well! Especially when "doubling" him up still leaves him crippled.

However, did you learn anything from this guys actions? His response? It is one the greatest tells a man could give you on how he might play, and you can then use that against him. Even if he didn't say that and just folded, it would be the same thing!

(sing to tune of Rick James' Super Freak)
He's a super-nit! Super-nit! He's super nitty, owwww...do-da-do-du, do-du, do-du-a-du....rofl
