After a couple years of playing online I realized that holdem poker is all about winning allin races. You just won't chip up enough by taking small pots. In freerolls I tend to donk early to build a stack then slow down a little. In cash entry rebuy tournaments I'm more cautious. The important thing to remember is to pick your races, don't wait for the blinds to go up and pick them for you.

Yes, that's right, our life in tournaments is depends on successful our stack in All-in. And this is like a coin fling

I agree. That being said it is important to put yourself in the best possible position during these races, and not get a case of the F its which can be easy to do in freerolls. Stay Focused

I think that is best to play only good hands and use your table image to steal blinds You also have to be patient in poker and make decisions while being pressed by feelings

I agree that you have to win some coin flips to do well in a tourney, Of course you have to win your races where you are a 70-80% favorite as well!

All very true. The difference between an average poker player and a winning poker player is the ability to gain chips in spots where ordinary players would not in order to to withstand the bad beat all in coin flips. Or it just may all be luck...haven't figured it out yet lol

While playing freerolls i agree but when you play cash tournaments players aren't so loose anymore and you can also chip up by taking small pots

And it gets worse for turbo and even worse for hyper tournaments.
Somehow you need:
- more skill, better cards and more luck to gain chips fast
- to recognise danger and fold to avoid chip loss
Assuming the average cards&luck are the same for everyone, the cc leadership list suggests skill does make the difference.
So: I need improve my skill

Tournaments are a gamble. You need to run well. It is difficult to get 70% vs 30% equity and just one loser hand and you are finished. I personally prefer big aces to pocket pairs for all ins, because with pocket pairs you know you are flipping but with an AK you still have good equity in every case rarely with aces.

Well i can submit for the early start in freerolls without a strong start you risk to be called every hand in the game if your stack is low. I have lost many hand in races that i have started strong but i was called by donkey hands.

All poker is a gamble short term.

But, skill wins out over the long term.

So, never focus on your luck or winning. Always focus on your skill.

go all in is a matter of luck even if you have a good hand you can lose, usually I always bet before the flop a good amount of chips, then my decision comes after the flop go all in or fold

Tournaments have high variance. Everything has to go right for you to win one. Win flips, hold against draws, successful steals and the big bluff go through.

I use to take the donk approach early in tournaments but I’ve lately switched to TAG during the early phases. This is an easy spot to set traps on donk hands or just overly aggressive players looking to double up early on hands like middle pair and draws, etc

Try TAG early and then LAG if you find your stack is short and blinds are increasing too fast.

Since I'm taking poker a bit more seriously I learned that those All-ins indeed are the key a lot of the times in tourneys & sngs.

But you shouldn't be blinded by your hand, the position and being in control is much more a factor.

Don't be afraid to lay away pocket pairs or AQ's etc on raises, wait your position and you can get more returns of a KT or something.

I don`t think anyone disagree that you have to win coinflips to win a turny. But it`s more to it than that. Like others has mention you should be able to build up stack by taking down smaller pots here and there. Winning turnys by only playing monsters is very difficult, as you will very often be a short stack, and will bust if you loose a race. I think a big differnse between a decent and great player is how they get value out of medium strength hands (66-99, kj - A9 kinda hands), and "winning" blind wars.

I recently understood that poker is not a bingo. If you play this kind of style, you'll loser in the long-term. Did you see that ITM or FT players are most probably the people you saw on ITM or FT before? they got skills to play poker imo

Well you should def have a few buy-ins because its so loose in the beggining and sometimes you cant pass up a good hand and shove but since a good amount of players play like maniacs you could def get your strong hands cracked. Openning your ranges a bit but still playing tight is usually good place to start. After a large number of the 'wild ones' get knocked out then you can tighten back up but still be aggressive. But def have buy ins be aggressive and dont tilt!
