I have participated in several freeroll tournaments but never won any.
Are freeroll tournaments really harder to win than other tournament types?

Not harder, just different especially early, and they don't pay much.

Completely different things, different tactics, different levels of players, different strategies for players. It is impossible to compare.

All sorts of players come to the freerolls. With skill, patience & a bit of luck you can make the money & even win.
Keep on playing your best game & you'll get there.

They are different in one or two ways. The biggest difference I have seen is at the start. There is a lot of all ins, because those players are trying to build a good stack early so they can last longer. I sit back and let them have their fun.The thing is and I always have a laugh or two watching those new to the game players. I see it all the time, those players will keep playing that way, and it don't take long for them to lose their stack. GL to you

It depends on how many players in the game.
I think long late register is more difficult than freeroll, for there are endless re-buy players.

Good advice there niphon56. And that is a fact that the MTTs with 3-5 hours of late registation is harder than any freeroll in many ways. I'm 58 and I just can't play one of those.

Many players play with much less caution on freeroll, because they do not risk anything to lose.

I think no. In freeroll most of the players do not value their hands as they value in real money tournaments , so its easier to win for players who playing seriously in freerolls. And it depends what kind of freeroll it is , what prize pool.

in freerolls players play without risking your Bank. Many rely on luck go all in, in the beginning of the game player stacks grow very quickly and by the middle of the tournament it is already very difficult to get in Top50.. Large freerolls from 1000 participants to win is not easy. Play one MTT at micro limits them to win not just the same but lighter than the freerolls :)

It is different but I'm not sure it's harder. People that have no investment in a game have nothing to loose so they will shove so so hands and they often catch. I think you need to be more cautious, even if I have AA or KK I know I have a good chance of loosing to someone that is being aggressive with 9 3 off. I have seen it happen many times in freerolls!!:D:D

Isn't that the truth? When that 3 flops I already know a 3 or 9 will be on the turn or river......

Amen brother!!! Can't begin to tell you how many times I have seen that happen!!! I hate to see AA in my pocket. I have just folded AA quite a few times with only a couple times that it would win!!:D:D

With freerolls you can lay the foundation for your bankroll. Some players have already proved that you can climb the limits without investing a single cent.
Freerolls are a free opportunity to gain experience. For example, it is very difficult to learn how to play well at the final table, because it's very rare that you get to it. How often do you start the tournament, and how often do you reach the final table?
Freerolls are fun. You do not risk anything, and in these tournaments players of the most different types gather, i.e. You have the opportunity to practice in the game against different opponents, which is a valuable experience.

Play cautiously in initial stages and dont go all in even if you have a decent pair or cards..

You never can underestimate anyone in Intial stages after 1 hr u can show your game, bluffing and all :)

good luck

that actually makes sense in a freeroll in terms of hourly return, at least that way if you bust you dont waste hours, and if you double up off the gate your odds of cashing increase dramatically

The longer you play in a freeroll it is better for you. You will learn more poker strategy, cards combinations, different ways of winning and losing, behavior of players. This is all important for the future of the game in larger rates. It is possible that I'm wrong.

Definetly different, but I wouldn't consider them "harder" per se. You just have to know how to approach different stages of the tournament. I would also go for the better value freerolls that are password protected, as generally the field takes it more seriously as compared to On Demand daily freerolls that people just donk off in.

Of course, as there is no investment by the players, they are less inclined to make profitable decisions because they're not afraid to lose because they won't lose any money as a result. So in the early stages, that's why you see a ton of all ins by players that are just looking to get lucky and build a stack quickly without any real skill involved in the process. Some people find this style of play entertaining, but obviously us as players that want to win it's annoying when people will always call with overcards or gutshots and never fold so it's harder to read players hands and try to put them on an exact range or anything like that. My advice? Just wait for a solid hand and value bet to death, including overbetting. When you have a decent hand (ex. one pair) it's better to pot control when the board gets scary but don't be afraid to value bet either. Also take into account implied odds on your draws, as people will pay you off much easier than in normal tournaments. Hope this helps!

The biggest difference is the mindset most players go into a freeroll with. It's a case of "I have nothing to lose so it doesn't matter if I play good or bad."

They might not know that they're thinking this but it's clear from the way they play. The key is not to get caught up in the mayhem and to wait for quality hands before entering a pot. You might still lose because an overeager player got in there with 67s and flopped a straight or flush but more often than not you'll take down pots.

The last thing you want to do is push all-in when entering the pot. People will call you with a very wide range of hands. Stick to standard raises and re-evaluate your hand after the flop.

just another type of playing. Try to adjust your play for this particular type of poker game. if you survive to the beginning of the game you have better chances.

good luck at tables!!!

I find freerolls harder because there are many players and most of them play very aggressive with crap hands and somehow luck is always at their side.. The last 10 freerols I've played I was eliminated in all of them with better hands!! :)

Winning a freeroll it is not an easy task but under no circumstance is harder than a big buy in tournament.

In a tournament with a buy in the most vital element is balancing every move you make.In a freeroll there is no worries for such thing because the vast majority of the participants barely have scratched the surface of the poker understanding. And of course as many have already mentioned they have nothing to lose by clicking randomly buttons.
