Hi everyone, I play poker on and off but now I really want to start taking tournaments seriously but I don't know where to start. Should I start online? Should play at my local casino(I live in Calgary, Alberta, canada, so there are lots of casinos here.)

Currently I am reading Dan Harrington's tournament books(I read good things about them and I got them at a good price at bookstore that was about to be closed).

I have read the first book and I liked it, learned some good things, some new to me. But what else should I be doing? Should I go to my local casino and see how the tournaments are played? Should I go online to see how tournaments are played and what everyone is doing?

I really don't know where and how to start, how did you guys start out your poker tournament career? What are the things you did? What did you study? Anything would be very helpful.

Please post any questions or any comments, thank you.

Watching twitch streams was and actually is very helpful for me. The most important is to understand what you read and the reasoning behing every action the book-hero does. I don't know if there is a better way to ''study'' than watching a pro grinding! It doen't matter if you read 10 books and nothing has changed in the way you look at your hole cards, the board or your opponents' moves and reaction.[I believe you got my point here]

As for the live / online thing I don't know. I prefer play online but this is how I see it from my point of view. Maybe you run better live , maybe you can read your opponents while look at them. Try out both and see what is suitable for you man!

If you read Harington o Holdeme, in the first book he says that the game cache is different from playing in tournaments.
I suggest that you develop a Bank roll , play more and get hand. Eventually all you get.

I think you are doing right. As for me, reading different books and watching specialised videos is helpful for those who wants to better thier poker skills, but also you can spend more time at online tournaments to inreach your experiance ( also you do not need to leave the house)!!!!

I just hopped in a live 1/2 game for $100. I won a little bit and just tried again and again. I didn't have a lot of losses early and just started building up. Practice is the best way to play. I think watching some poker on twitch is good if you don't have a lot of experience. But it all comes down to playing and getting a lot of hands in.

There's a lot of good tournament books out there. I too read Harrington's book, actually books, and found them great. Another great one is Gus Hansens "Every Hand Revealed." The entire book is about a tournament he won and the notes he made after the hands. I found it to be great insight into the mind of a great pro.
