Middle stages of the tournament $0.50 buy in $400 GTD at 888. About 250 players left.
I was doing fine with about 30k stack. 500/250 blinds. (around 35th)

Was on the BB with pocket Q's.

UTG (loose player) calls, UTG+1 calls. Lo jack raises to 6BBs. (42k stack) I call. UTG call. UTG+1 folds.

The flop comes A Q 9
So I'm with a set. Trying to bait the loose player I check. UTG also checks.

Lo jack raises to 5.6k. I call. UTG folds.

Turn - 9

L/J again raises about 5.6k. I re-raise 12k. He calls.

River - 8

So I'm with a full house and the only hands that would've beaten me are pocket A's or 9's.

So pot is around 40k. I was left with 9k. Went all in. He calls and shows aces.

I kind of felt like he hand a strong hand but thinking he would've bet more aggressively with aces, and considering my odds unfortunately got busted

What should I've done differently to play my hand?
I feel like I should've 3 bet him pre flop.

you played it fine IMO, just UL

if you 3b pre, are you planning to fold a 4b or somewhere on later streets?

Just a cooler and not much can be changed I think. if you 3bet he is coming in with a 4bet almost certainly and then what? you call and you still end up getting stacked because you are not folding trip Q's there. Only 6 combo's of pocket aces left after the flop, so just a cooler.

yeah if he 4 bets then it's likely he would've had aces or kings. Even if I call a 4bet I would've played more carefully. But it's hard to tell with micro stakes tournaments where people shove with A2.

then perhaps get to know his hand to be much stronger?
Thanks

I probably would have 3bet pre but you're never getting away from that hand. You played it fine, if it was me I would have lost all my chips quicker.

Limp calling meh, you say you are trying to bait the loose player, but what about the other 3 players still in the hand? Post flop your not getting away from the hand anyway. **** happens.

there were only 3 players in the hand after the preflop raise. myself at BB, UTG loose and the one with AAs.

That kind of hands is hard to go out of them with out a bid stack losse is extremly rare but i dont think any other way your betting will make the other to fold.

QQ goes all in preflop for sure AA would call.

AA goes all in preflop QQ would call in 90% of situation being in a MTT makes that 100%.

After you saw the flop...2 sets A vs Q same is hard to fold a set even if it is an A there.

I watched few years ago a live wsop there was less than 100 players left and at 1 table was 3 players with setts KK 88 and 99 they all was all in on river ofc KK won the pot (chip leader after that) Sadly i cant remember names of that players was on TV.

I call these loser hands...they are guaranteed to lose you money no matter what.Big set over big set...what could you have done. You played it correct folding would have been wrong he played it optimally to get your stack.

You only gave the tendencies of one opponent. More important to know is what you know about the LJ. If he is a good TAG or LAG, you can get a lot of info with a preflop 3B.

LJ raising bigger than typical after a few limpers seems like a good bet to steal. I would 3B to gauge strength of LJ. If I know he is a good player, and he comes over with a 4B, I could feel pretty confident he is AA or KK and could get away with a hard fold preflop.

Based on your pre-flop play, this is hard to get away once you hit your set. You could maybe try a pot-control line here, but most of the time, you are way ahead of villain range and should be aiming to get it all in. As TheNutz pointed out, there are only 6 combos of hands (all the AA combos) that beat you, and so you've got way too much equity to be getting out of this hand.

Why such an unambiguous answer, is there a sample of hands relative to time?

I think that there was no chance of escaping. The dude sat with AA and would go with them to the end, the good luck was usually on his side. That is with all, do not get hung up, play still more, go further.

hi!
you couldnt do anything there.its a set over set situation...very unlucky
with the 3bet preflop maybe he shoved to you or he just called you
if he just called you are in the same position as before
if he shoved, you think you can fold there? thats the only way to get out of this bad situation
(i couldnt fold my qq there..)

Certainly a bit of hard luck there. Your opponent played it well as he realized you must have a good hand and wanted to get as much out of you as possible. Whenever there are hands out there that can beat you, and your opponent is raising and raising, there is a good chance that he/she has the cards. Very tough to lay down QQ in that situation and I think i would have lost my stack as well.

You just were not lucky, you played correctly! You could not lose here, only if you dropped your QQ pre-flop
