Was recently in final table in my local card room with 3 people remaining. Was a Friday night 40$+10$ buy in with above normal amount of players. roughly 4200 prize pool. 1st 27% $1100, 2nd 18% about $750, 3rd 10%or $420. about 2270. I had a 50% of chips and other two 30% and 20%. They offered me $800 and they each take $735. I denied it and they seemed mad (not that I cared) and going on and on about how its 2am, we would all be profiting. But I felt I had a skill and chip advantage. around 3 am the two go all in I get out of way and smaller stack busts. At this time he has a slight chip advantage. He offered me a 50/50 split of $925 and I took it. I know in this scenario it worked to my advantage to hold off but in the long run is it better to make deals? Also was it the right move to just take the split and not play heads up?

If you have 50% of the chips, you should get 50% of the money.

You don't have to take a deal. I don't mind chopping with its headsup.

Deals are okay but that first offer was a not a genuine deal. they were just upset they couldn't pull one over one you. The heads up chop was a good call. The chop should work out to percentage of what you have in your stack with a little leeway in there one way or the other to close the deal.

Appreciate it. First time splitting and agree that first deal was a joke. To the point I wouldn't have even have split the heads up with the guy who initially suggested it. But it was like 3 am when it started at 6pm and my fiancé texting every 10 minutes... You on your way yet. NO...lol. So I jumped on the deal very quickly. hope to get in 30 live tournaments a month. Was a good start!

The first offer wasn't great, but remember you can always make a counter offer, too.

I don't mind taking a deal if I'm the shortstack, but if in the lead I'm usually going for the win. I don't mind seeing the ICM calculator numbers though.

Using Stack'd Hold'em edition App for Windows Phone10 and inputting your numbers (I used 1000,000 chips in play for input in the app) It gave me as a fair chop 1st $925, 2nd $725 and 3rd $620

Be interesting to see what some other ICM Apps come up with as a chop.

well i've twice made a deal when we were left 4 people out of roughly 3000 people and icm was applied so it was ok. the first offer seems ridiculous and glad you didn't take it. but other than icm is always fine by me

Agreed, that first offer most definality was a joke, taking the stated stacks of 50% to 30% & 20% that really wasn't a fair deal
.
I usually try to avoid making deals unless it's headsup & late/we've had enough of it. If there is no reason to make a deal, go for that N°1 spot.

And even then I always split according to stack instead of 50-50.
Congrats, a good start indeed . :)

I have come across this a few times. I usually don't take deals because I'm in it to win (have won three times, was offered a deal once and I turned it down). There are many factors that go into it.

You mentioned 3am....how long were you playing for? If you are tired and worn out, you will not be playing your best. Taking a deal might be a more profitable move there. What do you know about your opponent? Easy to beat, or a real challenge? Again, that could alter your decision. How serious of a player are you?

The other type of "deal" that I have come across many times is the side pot for the bubble burst. Now, I know this isn't really a "deal," but I consider it to be pretty stupid. Everyone agrees to pitch in around $20.00 or so and the side pot goes to the guy that busts before the cash. This only happens when you are AT the bubble, NOT at the start of the tournament (obviously). I hate this with a passion; it's the bubble. Period. If you get money, then the guy BEFORE you was the bubble. Does it really matter? This is poker. Sheesh.

I usually chip in anyways because I don't want to be the only guy who disagrees....someday I'll grow a spine and be a dick about it ;)
