Ideally, you wouldn’t want to go all-in during a poker tournament unless you were holding an excellent hand. However, everybody knows that pocket rockets rarely come around when you need them the most. So you’re often forced to take big risks in tournaments when you’re not holding a great hand.

When is that right time for a Risky Move ?

I disagree. WHen you're on the button and the blinds are tight raise nearly 100% of the time and if you have under 15bbs just open jam your button.

I'm not one who normally raises all my buttons, except when the blinds are tight I will raise Q5o, T3o, 95s etc. I basically only fold the very worst trash.

You have to categorize your risky moves. An example would be

Code Yellow - Where 3-betting an aggressor is risky,

Code Green - Where you're facing a c-bet out of position and calling with air planning to float.

Code Red - Where you're on the CO with basically nothing as a short stack, but your read on those left to act is really tight, so you shove.

There's always spots to find risky plays but what you want to avoid is code red, where you're basically gambling at that point.

So to answer your question, every time is the right time for a risky move.

When it is near the bubble. Players tend to play tight to make it ITM .. take some risks to steal pots from these players.

I don't change my game at all until my stack is reduced to 7x big blinds. Then it's go time . . . all in with any pair, any ace and any two broadway cards. I pretty much never deviate from this low stack strategy.

When you have 10-20 big blinds left, you need to try to catch a good hand and if nothing seems to be coming wait until the blinds pass and a lot of people fold in front of you. If only 1 person in front of you calls and you are on the button then I personally would play anything from A9 K9 Q9 J9 and up all in.

This is my opinion and did already wrote this on my blog (Me as a Freeroll Player )

The key to successfully making risky plays in a poker tournament is your ability to know when to do so. For instance, if you are holding something like A-J, and you have a chance to be isolated with a shorter stack, this would be an excellent time to make a move. Another time when you would want to make a move is when you’ve got a weaker player isolated.

But the key is to make moves before your stack is nearly gone. Sure you will bust out sometimes when going all-in, but if you ever want to win a tournament you have to take chances!

I would agree for the most part with the general consensus, the fewer bb the easier it is to play lower cards, as waiting it out takes too long. However, there is a right and a wrong time for both; choosing that time is an instinct I would love to develop further about my game!

I can only think of two:

The right time for risk is when your M is in danger zone.

Another would be at bubble time.

Consider everything, position, players still to act, table dynamics, there's so many things to think about when it comes to taking risks in tourneys, you're usually going to have to win a few flips to go deep in a tourney regardless of how well you play, that's just the nature of the game.
