Mainly I play SNG and Cash tables, although when I do decide to play the MTT's, I always contemplate whether to register from the get go (in hopes of gaining Large Stack quickly) OR to wait a bit and maybe register half way through later registration. I have had success at both ends, however I am wondering if there is a BEST time to register. I do note that I normally will not enter into a MTT if average stack is more than 2,000chips than the start stack. If that makes sense? Basically, Is it best to register prior to start time? or wait for a bit and jump in halfway though late registration? Any advice would be GREATLY appriciated! I have been scratching my head on this for a while, and being a new member of this site... thought it was the perfect place to ask! thanks!

depends how aggressive you are, if you have no problem going all in fairly quick then you can join late reg no problem. If you're extremely conservative then you may want to start when the tournament does. That's my opinion at least.

as for me it is best to register in tournaments in the beginning. on small stakes can learn how to play other players and increase their stack at the expense of inexperienced players who go first))

from the starting to Play loads of Newcomers n stack them off... that s the best way to build a big stack.. if u late reg ,then it is mostly luck only as you will be in push fold mode

Depends what suits you ..... I find that when I have big stack and blinds are small I tend to do silly decisions and call with hands I wouldnt normally call with ...... but guess that's just me :D so I prefer to register later on if it's not turbo but regular speed tourney.

That's not really true, is it?

There is luck involved if you are stacking off in the early stages against various weak players. There is arguably less luck involved if you join when most of the weak players have been eliminated. The disadvantage is that most of the easy pickings have also gone.

In rebuys I sometimes buy in at the end of the rebuy period, but generally I play tournaments from the start.

Personally I want to register as quick as possible. Lots of donks waiting to give you their chips. Don't get too greedy and play/call to loose though.

I think it is best to register early , as it is already possible to build up a stack and learn the game opponents, check them on a bluff and adapt to their game

To me it is according how big the blinds are and what size of starting stack is offered to begin with.

Depends on the tournament, if it is a low buy in you not going to get as many cheap flops in the beginning with players trying to double up. If the tourney is a turbo and you register late, you will need some good hands in a shorter period of time. I always try to build my stack slowly and get a decent stack when the antes come out and then try to get more aggressive then. If you register late, you have to build your stack quickly.

I dont care who you are or how you play. ASAP is the most +EV way to play a standard FO MTT.

edit - yes hyper trbo rebuys with an oversized addon and especially those that slow the blinds down post end of rby period can be viable to join at end and only for 3 units but otherwise...
Earlier is best

^^^ This.

Don't let the blinds get to big. Maybe level 4, depending on the Structure.

I usually never do well in late reg especially when close to the deadline.

Not enough time in to try and see how players are playing so too hard to get by with position raises or blind stealing until something workable falls into my hands

Earlier the better, For me i'm always spying the leaders early to get an idea and notes for later. Knowing its important to get as much +EV as possible and take advantage at every possible oppertunity/

It's strange tactics I think to enter very late when the average stack is often 15-20BB and yours is 1/4 of it. You may only push or fold.

It depends how big is your edge at given field and your knowledge level about basic tourney strategy especially Early stage when blinds is not really worth for stealing. If you decide to come in at the beginning then you really need to know when to hold them and when to fold them (good skill's of postflop play generally is the tiny edge entering early). Early stage entering giving you to better knowledge on your opponents beting pattern's and the image which they are greating! (but keep in mind it depends how often blinds will increase). If blinds go up fast per round then the table tend to collapse to quick to get any remarkable edge!

Ofcourse there is some personal preference for entering early or late (are u tight player or are you looser?)

if you can't have an advantage from the early donks, you have to question whether the tournament in general is +ev or not. yes, you will lose sometime to lucky shoves, but you will more often get a bigger stack because of it. start when the tournament does and go from there, and prey on the weaken when you have solid holdings.

it is very hard to be consistently profitable when starting with a smaller stack than most everyone else.

Depends on tournament speed I guess. If it's a turbo, I rather start from beginning and work on my stack. If it's a slow tournament, there is no big diff when to start, you might aswell start later. But then again, why not start from the beginning and work on it, if you want to win it, starting from beginning would be the least risky way.

The best time to enter should be the best stack size/blind level you play. If you can handle an early start with a large stack, then do it.

I remember reading a pro talking about this; He waits until the blinds give the person entering about 50 bigs, vs 200 to start on time. He is not good with such a large stack so early, but works marvels at 50 bigs entering.

So, you had success with each, which one are you most comfortable with/play the best?
