I think focus is very important when playing a tournament. I played very badly today as I'm so worried about Irma hitting Miami. I wasn't one with the game, I wasn't focused. When I play tennis I also think focus is very important. There's watching the ball and really watching the ball. I get much better results in tennis and poker when I'm 100% intensely focused. It amazes me that so many players play multiple tables at once so I guess a lot of people don't agree. What do people think? If you play multiple games at once, why? Do you think you are that much better than everyone else that you don't need to focus or just that luck is such a big component you get better results for your time by playing several table, or some other reason? I'm curious. :)

I do this with cash games because there are so many hands that I'm not going to play, I can just insta-fold those and concentrate on the ones that have good odds.

Ahh that's interesting. I don't play cash (only tourneys), I can see that might be different. Still, what happens when you get 2 hands at once that require attention? Can you handle it ok?

I believe the OP was talking about tournaments, also this is the tournament thread.

All sports are like that my friend, the more you pay attention the better you do. No real profound revolation here but good to remind ourselves. Those who choose to multi table are A. Either good enough or B. losing money becasue they are not good enough, you have to decide which you are and if its for you.

Cash game grinders are not going to make money playing 1 table, no matter their level of focus.

One of my friends, supernova status was played in a multi table, from cache to tournaments, but alas he never has a place to has problems with money. My other familiar, gold-platinum was playing a MTT multitabling about 36 a day, with buy-ins 10-35$, recently returned from a casino in Sochi in Krasnaya Polyana, two days plus two at his, when I asked about the income, he called the amount of$ 2,000 per month, however this man has debts, two mortgages, and lives in hostel... It turns out that doesn't add up) I play in one table, prefer so attention is not scattered, to read of the player easier, again, you can mark to make. This year was the progress I have with my theory, I lived for months in a hotel at the expense of winning, received a gold status in June, for 4 days, for me this is because I play for more than 8 years. At the moment I have a goal and plan to achieve it, I think the most important thing, and not multi-tabling. With respect! Good luck!

I play such low stakes (mainly freerolls) so that my focus is not great. I usually have internet tabs open, something on Netflix as well as a Twitch stream while I play. I would agree though that low concentration affects play. If I ever make a deep run I typically pay attention more and make better decisions.

I do not think it is that people think they are that much better than someone for the reason they play multiple tables. Having patience is always a good thing but sometimes having 2 tables or 3 open can decrease getting giddy for me and I can make better decisions because I'm not frustrated nothing is happening. Anything more than 3 or 4 and it just gets too difficult to keep up with what is happening.

I definitely have this sentiment. I generally play a little stupid lose hoping to hit something to trick a solid player until I build a larger than average stack then I play aggressively and less stupid. But I definitely always have other distractions and try to have less distractions once i get closer to maybe getting a few cents from a freeroll lol...

As the buy in raises the concentration level also rises

100% .. I never have any other open Apps. Too distracting for me. Same with playing multi-table. Just can't do it.

I think it is not only about focus what you talking about. I think you are more nervous of what is gonna happen instead of not focusing. What I think is, and correct me if i'm wrong, you can compare this with playing a MTT above your BRM. If you have a bankroll of 10$ and you are playing a 5$, I should be really nervous about how I play instead of losing focus.

I think you should start playing poker when you are relaxed and not stressed out. The focus is more about the way you play, not getting disturbed when you are playing poker.

I, too, could not play several tables at the same time, but after a while I learned how to make many decisions automatically. In time, you can.

I usually play 3-4 tables because one table is too boring for me.

Tourney, I don't typically multitable, but cash I do, at least low limit. If I were doing higher limit cash, I would just play one. For micro stakes, the risk is very little compared to the reward of seeing double, triple or quadruple the number of hands.

But as this is the tourney thread, I prefer a single tourney at a time for the exact reason you mention. Focus.

Usually in the right approach to the game, the greatest difficulty for understanding is that in poker you can not focus on the result.

I open several tables, a tournament and even a cash game at the same time, I open the cash game or the second tournament so as to get distracted from the long tournament and I focus on both games and so it's not boring in the tournament to play

It depends. The bigger the prize, the greater the level of focus :) That's because I don't play many freerolls lately - it's hard to stay focused when playing with lots of people and for (almost) nothing.

Most Players play a math system only. there are some that do play with great focus and have a better understanding to what is happening at the table. they notice things that will help them when in hands and how to play them hands against the other players. Every player you will play against will be played different then the others and with out the focus you wont catch what you need to do to take the pot .
You will have days when your focus is on and other days when your focus is not on. Recognize when your focus is on and play more and limit when your focus is off. only you can determine how good your focus isso be true to yourself about this and it will help .
